fuel consumption

I'm thinking of getting a g4.  I do a lot of road driving to get to my work which involves driving on hill tracks, I'd like to know what sort of fuel consumption you can get with a g4, considering its an auto and all that kit added on.  Is it a vehicle for everyday driving?
By CraigS-L - 1 May 2009

Which One? A D3 or RRS petrol will do about 16-20 mpg depending on your driving, not sure what the diesel D3's do, but a little more

110's do about 25-28 generally (don't think the kit makes it worse for a G4) and D2's are probably the worst, 14-16

Hope this helps :D

You might also consider LPG conversion...the cars are definitely good for everyday drive...some of the members have done and are very happy :)

As Craig says it all depends on which one you get. I have a D2 and use it as a daily driver, not as economical as the wife's Clio but hey the grin factor makes up for that:D

Seriously though though I get around 18 in town and over 20 on a run unless I'm generous with the loud pedal. Also noticed that the mpg is pretty much the same whether towing the caravan or not.

With the difference in the cost of diesel it works out pretty much the same for me.

YMMV.

Like Mark, I've got a D2 (which is up for sale if you want... ;) )...

On a recent run down to the Alps, I decided to analyze the consumption figures. So, for a family of 4, all the ski gear but no roofrack, this is what I got:

* Steady 75mph - Just over 18mpg.

* >80mph - Just over 14mpg.

No matter how I drive, I can't seam to get more than 18mpg but likewise, it doesn't seam to matter how hard I drive it (95mph, towing, etc...) I can't seam to do worse than 14.

As for LPG - Think very carefully before you do the conversion. Engines which have been run on petrol for a while don't like LPG. LPG is also quite hard on the ignition systems... The savings you make at the pump may well end up being spent on engine re-builds.

Many thanks for that info. It's going to be one the Diesels that are for sale at the various LR dealers at the moment, I have to sell my VW transporter 4motion first though.

So I should get mid to high 20s at least with the diesel auto.

thanks again

By camel_landy - 2 May 2009

It depends on how you drive it... The diesels are far more fussy than the V8s around the subject of driving style vs economy.

In a word  NO,, :w00t:  1000 miles now on the D3 TDV6,, best is 20,7,(100 mile m-way run) worst is 17.3, (heavy off road ),, If you drive it lightly, you may get 25 !! All down to the MT tyres (get a spare set of road rims/tyres) roof rack, and RAI,,  I recon at best, i have gained 2 mpg over the old Sport,, but lost the fun factor of the 4.4 V8 :D

The D3 could well be for sale soon !!

...and with the price difference between petrol & diesel, it's costing more to run the diesel.

My d3 g4  - 2008 diesel does 25mpg (calcuated) on mixed motorway and urban driving on MTR's . my wifes 'clean' D3 does about 27/28 but on more urban driving on pirelli scorpions  - good quality fuel and the odd dash of millers seems to keep them sweet

cheers

Last fill,, all 75-80 mph  motorway,, the lie machine says 20.4,, actual calculation of fill to fill, came out at 18.9 :D

Got better costs per mile, from the V8 Sport :)

On recent Morocco trip 5040 miles, D110, with 4 people, full G4 kit, spare wheel and tent on roofrack, all camping gear equipment, 50Litres water 60 diesel in jerry cans inside averaged 27.3mpg. This included sand and offraod driving.

Useful to know,, Will be able to compare with a 110 Puma doing the same trip, bar the long French legs, and same load

Ferry leaves on Sunday :), then a 12 hour non-stop trip through Spain, then down into the Atlas mountains and desert

I've a 2008 LRD3 G4 and am getting approx 22mpg and I have had it 'worked' on by Twisted Performance. I have taken off the large G4 Challange plate from between the front headlights and replaced with a decal, this has helped by about 1-2mpg. I use it everyday to commute and play, some days she can put on 300miles, I just love it!:D

Hii BB

Welcome to G4OC :D

Is the figure from the optimistic trip computer, or via proper calculation on Lt's used ??  My trip is out by 2-2.5 mpg !!!!

Hi Tim, :)

Good point! I was only getting 20ish until the boys at Twisted did the business. Am thinking of switching to road tyres to help further and have even contemplated taking the roof rack off but this is proving to be more problematic due to the way the lighting loom has been rivitted to the underside of the alu platform. Any suggestions?

By davezrx - 10 May 2009

CAME BACK WITH ALN ED today from driffield and we were getting 26.9 /25.5 all the way doing 70mph

where possible  08 d3 diesel 2.7

I have just bought a G4 RR the 4.4 does 16 to 17 mpg whatever I do. Better than my Defender but has anybody got experience of an LPG conversion or Hydrogen Fuel Extractors ? I am thinking JE Engineering ?
By G4 LRV - 11 May 2009

Hi All,

after 5,600 miles and running on MTR tyres on mixed roads my 'lie computer' states I'm averaging 23.4 MPG. I reckon its nearer 24.3 MPG in reality.

I'm going to remove the large front G4 plate and put a decal there instead, it's got to improve things a bit?

Still got a large 'grin' factor about driving and owning it though ;-) Even better that there ain't that many of us G4 'types' this far North :-)

Don't bother... Short term, you might save at the pump but long term it'll probably cost you more in engine re-builds and additional wear & tear on the HT system.

IMHO - Out of all of them, YYZ deserves to be kept as original as possible.

However, it's your car & your choice but that's my 2p worth. :D
