Hello to all,

I have recently (just about 2 months ago) purchased a Disco3 G4 which came to Spain. Yesterday, while surfing the web for the accessories I need, I came acorss this forum which is simply fantastic. I will be positing some pictures soon!

I have several questions which I would greatly appreciate all the advice on:

1. My G4 came without the roof rack lights and plaque in the front. I have purshased 4 HELLA lights but now I face the problem in how to install them. I have searched everywhere for pictures and advice on the setup and installation, but haven´t found much. Would anyone be so kind in sending me more details on this? FYI, in Spain, it is illegal to have roof rack lights so I have two options: Install them anyway and run the risk of being fined, or installing them on a fixed cross bar which I can fit on anytime.

2. Does anyone know where I can purchase more original G4 stickers / decals as some of mine are pretty scratched?

3. Where can I purchase the front G4 plaque? I notcied that the holes for the support have been made, but I guess the plaque was either removed or lost...

4. I currently have a Hi Lift Jack (which I used quite a lot in my other previous DiscoTD5), but now I face the following problem: Where do I place the jack when I need to replace a wheel? There are no jack points anywhere on the G4 which allow me to lift it up properly. Please advise.

5. I plan on buying the genuine Land Rover 5 seater WaterProof Seat Covers. I have contacted several LR Part houses in UK for this (as in Madrid there is very little support). There are two colors available: Sand and Aspen Grey. Does anyone have these covers on their DiscoG4? I am unsure on what color to choose so I have been searching for photos but haven´t been lucky...I think the Sand will look better with the orange...

Thanks!!!

hi and welcome to the club

did you buy the D3 from a UK dealer or Spanish, if UK i am suprised that the lights and plaque were not intact on delivery if spanish it would follow that they removed them but should have included them with any kit already in the vehicle, i.e jerry cans tow ropes or first aid kit, extra spare wheel.

the good news is that plaques and stickers should be available from the club as they were given a stash at eastnor.

fitting the lights would be a competent auto electrician due to the routing and relay / operation of the lights again your local culture may dictate otherwise.

an uptodate copy of LR Rave cd should have the wiring diagram if not a further shout to the forum here or at www.disco3.co.uk should get the info you need

regards

Hi Martin!

I bought the vehicle straight from a LR dealer in Spain. Only two G4s came to Spain (110 Defender and Disco 3). I have some magazines where my car was featured in (october and november issue...) and on some photos, the roof rack had everything...but on the latest magazine, the roof rack was new (which is the one I have now). I asked about this in the dealer and they don´t know what happened...maybe they replaced it due to some incident...

Thanks for the advice!

Is it one of the '09 TDV6 cars or is it one of the '06 V8 petrol?

M
By MaG4 - 16 Jun 2009

It is a 2009 TDV6 version.
By camel_landy - 16 Jun 2009

OK... I've just seen the post in the FS&W section talking about an '09 TDV6. :D

Not all cars went out with the extra kit in the boot.

As for the wiring of the lights, they went to an accessory switch on the dash (just to the left of the instrument cluster). If switched on, they were wired to come on with the full beam.

The HV ballast packs were wired just behind the lamps, mounted under the roof rack floor (IIRC).

Hi Marcello,

Welcome to the forum, I just replied for questions 1 & 2 at another post (ie stickers coming soon, no plaques so far). On the seat cover, pls make sure you get them for the D3 and also NOT in black (faulty product). I found some on ebay for about £70-80.

You might want to touch basis with Yuri (XE1UN) who owns a D3 G4 2006 and also lives in Spain!

Cheers

What do you mean by: The HV ballast packs were wired just behind the lamps, mounted under the roof rack floor (IIRC).

I have spoken to some local installers and they told me that they will need to make a custom fit in order for the lights to stand up properly...As for the switch, it is already installed, on the right of the dash board. But my concern is about the actual installation: if I should make the cutouts on the air deflector above and make custom fittings...or make a removable crossbar.

As for my other questions, any advise?
By MaG4 - 16 Jun 2009

Hello Augusto,

Thank you for the responses. Please keep me updated about the status of the original stickers and plaques.

As for the seat covers, I have contacted Famous Four:

http://www.famousfour.co.uk/new_parts/parts-veh-disco_3-sec-intr.html

I beleive this is the original covers...

I will try to contact yuri...thanks!

The Hella HID lamps used on the event run at a high voltage and as such, they use a ballast pack to supply the required voltage. These were mounted just behind the lamps but under the roof rack floor.

I don't know what the lamps were bolted to but the wind deflector on the front of the rack was cut to make them fit.

Hi Ma,

Nice to hear you got that car, must say that your car its not exactly an event vehicle, came to Spain as a tangiers orange D3 without any equipment on it, then some accesories were fitted and stickered as G4 demo unit like the other 110 in tangiers orange.

LR send many tangiers orange D3s and 110s to different countries to promote G4 2009 selections but they were naked and some countries fitted locally some of the missing accesories.

By MaG4 - 16 Jun 2009

Hello Marshall,

I am not sure if it is an event car or not. According to the Dealership which I purchased it from, this car was going to be used by the Spanish Team...I do know that it has been used for several promotions and that somehow, the original G4 roof rack with all the accessories has been removed and replaced with another (without lights). As for the other accessories, I recieved all of them. Who can I consult this with...to check if it is an event car?

Anyhow, thats not my concern, I need to find a solution to the lights on the rack and my other questions. Do you have any advice?

By The OC (Augusto) - 16 Jun 2009

If the car is LHD then its not an event vehicle; but rather a promo vehicle.

Agree with you that what matter is to have it fully equipped ;)

Uow, you have all the Red Cross stickers on it, great!!:D Even the white bar on the rear window!

Land Rover has requested dealers to remove all stickers that mentioned the partnership with the RC before decommissioning the cars here in the UK, so all were taken off (and some other stickers were also removed in some cars)

Adrian (adesg4) is measuring up all this stickers so we can make replica ones for the club members so at one point I think he will contact you!

One idea suggested here for the white strip on the side (and back) would be to add the club's website rather than the writing on RC, but that has yet to be agreed!

Congrats on the car it is great indeed and while it's not meant to be a competitor or event car, what matter is that you can have it with exactly the same spec as one!

Well done!

Thanks OC.

I still have two questions which i would like advice on.

1. Because my G4 came without the roof rack lights, I need to find out more on the technical installation process so I can install the 4 Hella Compact Iluminators I bought. I would greatly apprecte it if anyone could post up here close up pictures of the installation on their Disco 3 G4 models. Right behind the wind deflector of the rack, there is a lot of free space until the beginning of the composite aluminium floor...I imagine all the wiring goes there...Anyhow, please post pics of the installation seen from behind so I can have a better idea. Thanks.

2. Has anyone installed a compressor in their G4? Whereabouts and what are the recomendations as for makes?
By The OC (Augusto) - 18 Jun 2009

Would suggest a couple of options

1- Someone with technical knowledge to take some shots of a similar car and explain step by step ( or maybe complement what has been told already by previous posts)

2- Adrian (adesg4) or Alan Edwards (aedw57) might be able to get some more technical stuff!

Good luck! :P

brillant  pictures of the g4 ...ma

great picture of up top of hill :cool:you look one cool dude

first one ive seen in private hands with the complete sticker set on it

By The OC (Augusto) - 18 Jun 2009

I stand to be corrected but I think the removal of RC stickers has to do with RC itself not owning the trademark in the uk (think the UK military does), hence the request to remove. Elsewhere is not an issue...

Hi Marcello,

Is the awning a local one?   Do you have a picture of it 'depolyed?'

By MaG4 - 19 Jun 2009

Hello Alan,

No, it is not a commercial one. I had it custom made according to my indications as commercial awnings from Hannibal are ridiculously expensive. I will post a picture up this weekend.

Hola MaG4,

You're not the guy in Madrid who wanted to buy my G4 are you? ;) I have seen your car on the cover of Solo Auto 4x4 magazine.

Fortunately you will not have the horrific fuel bills us V8 owners have! The roofrack lights were probably taken off in order to pass the ITV (MOT). When I eventually import my G4 here I will have to 'temporarily' take them off.

Try E-bay for the seat covers. I have fitted genuine beige ones to my G4 and they are top quality. There was also somebody selling the plaques on there.

Cheers,

Chay
By MaG4 - 21 Jun 2009

Hey Chay,

Yeah, my car is the one which came out on a couple of 4x4 magazines in Spain About the fuel, totally agree with you!!! The roof rack issue is quite strange because in some articles it had it...but then in one issue, it didn´t. I really cannot understand why it has been replaced...

Anyhow, where do you live? I am in Madrid so if you do live in Spain, maybe we could meet up once at any event. Let me know!

I finally purchased the seat covers in beige aswell! Got them through Famous Four. They should arrive in 2 weeks max. Send me some pics of yours so I see how it looks.

Cheers

anyone here going to the Spanish 'National?' at the Experience cemtre in October?
By bigdave G4 - 23 Jun 2009

Here you go

By MaG4 - 24 Jun 2009

Thank you for all the detailled pics. Really appreciatte the help. Once I have the lights fixed on y rack i will post some pictures up. As the lights are illegal in Spain, I am going to install them in a way that they can be folded down behind the air deflector. And whenever I want, I simply roll the lights up. They will be mounted on a bar which will allow me to lay the lights down at anytime, this way avoiding police to see them...
By camel_landy - 24 Jun 2009

Hmmm...

You'll probably find that it's quite LEGAL to have the lights fitted. It'll just be ILLEGAL to actually use them while on the road.

Well, that's the way the law works here in the UK.

By MaG4 - 24 Jun 2009

Spanish law is different. Here they forbid you to have even "decorative" lights on your roof rack. I have even tried installing on my other DiscoTD5 these lights with the cover and had them always disconnected, but even so, I got fined and they gave me 15 days to take them off!

If Spanish Authority notice that you have any electrical circuit installed above, they do not give you an "ok" when you pass the car through it´s 3 years check. In addition, all national police pull you over if they spot you with these lights and fine you up to 600 euros!! It is all a pain in the ***...so we Spanish Civilians have to find other ways in order to have them fitted on top without being spotted. That is why I must install them in a way that they can be kept hidden.
By roymck - 29 Jun 2009

Yes your correct , I have roof lights on my D2 but its still on UK plates , and will be in Spain for as long as i can without getting it onto Spanish plates . The annoying thing is new jeeps ( the 4 door station wagon style) have the factory option of roof lights as a Standard fitment and i have seen these in Spain on new Jeeps ...In the Uk you dont know how lucky you are , different size tyres , raise the suspension , all no problem , spain you would think the world is going to end if you modify your car .

Believe there is a fully kitted G4 RR sport in Northern spain and it passed the ITV with roof lights as he had a letter from LR saying that they where factory fitted ..Good luck

Hey guys,

I am about to carryout the roof rack LIGHTS installation with an experienced offroad preperation company here in Madrid. I have one last doubt which I need some advice on:

Where does the electrics (cables) go through the roof? Please send me a picture of the exact location so I can see where the cables are passed through.

This way, the installer can do it the same way as it has been done on the orignal competition Disco G4s....

I already have the switch placed inside the dashboard for the roof rack lights, so i imagine, or hope that the cables might be already passed through the car and near the roof, waiting to be connected (because my car used to have the roof rack original lights but for some unknown reason, they were taken off).

Thanks a lot!
By CraigS-L - 30 Jun 2009

Have no pictures but can describe it.

On the RHD cars the dash switch feeds through a grommet behind the dash in to the second battery box directly in front of the driver, where the relays sit. From here the power is fed either to the front lamps, or across the back of the engine bay to the base of the A pillar. Is it then fed up the A pillar and comes out through a hole drilled in the plastic roof trim, inside the pedestal for the expo rack, and then to the lights at the front.

Does that make sense

By MaG4 - 30 Jun 2009

kind of....good detailed description but before speaking to the installer, I would like to be 100% sure of the location.

Would be great to see a picture of the location where the cable goes out through. Is it possible for you to send me any?
By MaG4 - 2 Jul 2009

Yersterday I stopped by the LR dealership to discuss all this...

To our surprise, upon opening the hood and revising all the electrical connections, we came across the entire roof rack lights installation. It is all hooked up properly and the switch (which I should connect to the lights switch) was stored next t the battery with all the wiring curled up.

Great news, because all I have to do now is stretch this cable and bring it up the A-bar (through the outside, beneath the black plastic cover...next to snorkel) and up the roof rack railing. This is how the installation was done previosuly when the lights were installed.

Now I have to speak to the installer and think of a movable cross bar which is able to hide the lights...
