Whilst G4 has been cancelled, one of the vehicles has been redeployed for the following; raising environmental issues - see below.  This vehicle was a replacement for one of the Recce vehicles …...

EXPEDITION SPREADS WORD OF CLIMATE CHANGE

11 Aug 2009
Team to raise awareness to 10,000 school children along the Atlantic coastline

A team of three Cambridge graduates has today received a Land Rover Defender 110 and a cheque for £10,000, at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London, to embark on an expedition of approximately 32,000km, through 31 countries, to raise awareness of the potential impacts of climate change along the Atlantic coastline.

'Atlantic Rising', winners of the 2009 'Go Beyond' Bursary, which was awarded by the RGS-IBG and Land Rover earlier this year, will navigate land around the Atlantic Ocean by attempting to follow the 1m contour line which scientists forecast could become the new coastline in 100 years.

'Atlantic Rising', winners of the 2009 'Go Beyond' Bursary

Tim Bromfield, Lynn Morris, and Will Lorimer, will follow the 1m contour line around the Atlantic as closely as possible, visiting schools and creating an educational network with up to 10,000 students along the route. They will report from some of the remotest coastal regions of the Atlantic Ocean and establish a sea-level change education project that can be used in 1,200 schools throughout the world via the Rafi.ki online schools network.

Tim said: "Education is the most powerful weapon we have to combat climate change. By encouraging students around the Atlantic to work together, we want to highlight our shared responsibility in dealing with this critical issue. By encouraging international friendships, we hope to make people care enough to act."

Dr Rita Gardner, Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), said: "This project, made possible through our partnership with Land Rover, focuses on one of the most challenging issues we face the potential impacts of climate change in coastal regions. As recipients of the Bursary, Atlantic Rising have been granted the opportunity to 'go beyond' their normal limits and boundaries and at the same time support one of the Society's objectives which is to promote the wider understanding and enjoyment of geography."

This is the second 'Go Beyond' Bursary run by RGS-IBG on behalf of Land Rover, whose partnership with the Society has existed for more than 20 years.

The manufacturing and mileage of the 110 Defender vehicle are being carbon offset through ClimateCare who run Land Rover's CO2 Offset Programme in the UK, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Austria and other international markets.

Meet the team

Tim Bromfield Tim graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Geography and has worked as a teacher in both London and Uganda. For the last 5 years he has been working at Accenture where he has led projects such as the Guardian's Katine project in Uganda. Until recently he has concentrated on building Accenture's sustainability practice. Desperate to swap his suit for sandals, Tim continues to work with the African Medical and Research Foundation.

Lynn Morris Lynn finally settled in London working as a video journalist for the Press Association, after spending six years as a reporter in three different continents. She blames her wanderlust on a childhood spent between family in Kenya and Somerset. Lynn graduated from Cambridge in 2002 with a BA in Social Anthropology and also holds an MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester.

Will Lorimer - After leaving Cambridge University with a first class degree in Social Anthropology, Will went to film school in Manchester before working as a cameraman in Palestine, Poland and America. He has worked on productions for the BBC and Channel 4 as well as directing programmes for Five, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel. When not working, he usually bolts to the West Coast of Scotland for mountaineering and fishing expeditions.

I hate to be a party pooper but surely an expedition to raise awareness of climate change can only be seen as being ironic in using a 4x4 vehicle? Surely if they were really worried about it they'd cycle or walk or go by donkey? I guess its free so it'd be rude not to! :P

would it be this defender thats on ebay in bits

Still not convinced we are actually having an impact on climate and that what we're experiencing is merely a natural cycle.

IMHO certain groups are being quite selective with the data they use. For example... A friend of mine has just come back from an Arctic region I went to in 1990. He had significantly more pack ice on his trip this year than I experienced.

Global warming... My @rse!

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for sustainable power, etc... and I'm all for what they're doing. I just don't subscribe to the doom & gloom that some people put about.

There is a picture of the Expediton at this month LRO. They were stuck in the sands of Mauritania.

They could remember where to find the key remote (they said winch isolator key :ermm:)
By Robin Gale - 4 Nov 2009

Me being sad and looking lots of differnent g4 pictures I have spotted that all the pic's of there defender being used was off BT08BTY http://www.lro.com/news.php?sid=285&page=1

But now they had gone its BT08BTX http://www.atlanticrising.org/gallery/photo-view.asp?id=11&show=73

Maybe someone had a little crash!!

By stu_007 - 5 Nov 2009

Pehaps they did... somone will get a good project. Just to confirm, these vehicles were NOT replacemnt recce vehicles; only four were ever used. The 08 plates show they would have been registered well after the recce was finsih and were intened to act as support vehicles for the actual event.:)
By Robin Gale - 5 Nov 2009

I must say, I was very tempted when I first saw this as I would love to own Tdci 110 G4, but when you look at the work involved and cost I dont think it will be worth it. I will just have to wait until someone who was lucky enough to the the 07 plate gets bored of it. :)
By adesg4 - 5 Nov 2009

These 2 vehicles could, though very unlikely, have acted as replacements if required, as 08 registration ran from March 08 to end August 08. Recce was still on in June /July 2008.
By DannyBalls - 6 Nov 2009

Are there any other 110's prepped and ready to be deployed just in case? That is a great looking vehicle and I would love to have one state side.
By adesg4 - 6 Nov 2009

There was no need for the vehicles since the 09 challenge was cancelled.

There are 3 Defender 130's, the Atlantic Rising D110 and rumours of 1 further 110 left but that is it.

By davezrx - 6 Nov 2009
