G4 Owners Club

Is this a 'real' G4?

Hello, I am writing for advice from someone who knows a lot more than I!!!

I have seen an 02 D2 RHD advertised through an independant LR dealer (RST), they are only 'advertising it' and it is a private sale.

I have been told it has had a chassis change and runs a Td5, and the odo states mileage is only around 20K. It is stated to have come back over from South Africa in bits and reasembled on this new chassis. It is a 'commercial' in that it has no rear seats and a thwacking great metal plate behind the front seats. It has HK steroe, sat nav and full electric leather seats.

Firstly, I would like your opinion as to whether this a a common 'route' for G4's to turn up in the UK. Is this likely to be a replica? are there any special plates etc inside (I couldn't find any, but didn't go through with a fine comb!) the asking price is around £12000 - this seems almost 'to good to be true'... and I know from bitter experience (my first 'hybrid' turned into a rung car) that it is seldom all that glitters is not gold..

G4 X G4 Number Plate

Very Unusual Vehicle

Hmmm, decidley fishy methinks.

1. All the D2's were V8 - 4.6 in the US and 4.0 for all others

2. They were all Automatic not Manual gearbox

3. AFAIK all the vehicles came back complete, not in bits

4. They were all on '52 plates not '02

5. The only NAS spec ones were the US ones, the SA cars were Rest Of World spec

6. They didn't have Sat-Nav built in, they used Garmin unit's attached to the top of the dash

7. What is that number plate all about :ermm: G4 X G4 is not a legal UK plate :w00t:

It may be a genuine G4 body that has been transplanted onto a TD5 chassis, there were some bodies that Equicar were selling off but IIRC they were US ones. If you can get the VIN number it may help, the club holds details of all the cars used.

I would approach with caution though. If you are after a D2 there is a genuine one for sale within the club.....

I truly appreciate the response. I took the VIN when I was rolling around underneath and in the bay. SALLTGM873A779122.

The 'reg' should read G4 xGA (a)... and according to one of these Car reg check texts, the reg is registered as a 2002 'S' spec (july 02) with 5 owners and 1 colour change!!!

May I make a donation to your club for the assistance offered?

G4 Discovery II - BV52KGK
RHD 4.0 V8 Petrol

The Discovery I've got is slightly different from other G4 Discovery IIs in that:

• It was one of the vehicles used to launch the G4 in 2002.
• It's probably the only one that was produced in UK spec. (A lot of the G4 Disco IIs have had new engines to get them to conform to EU regulations.)

As you can see from the photo, KGK was used to launch the event. As well as appearing in the publicity shots, it also appeared in all the magazines around Dec'02 / Jan'03 with the journalists test-driving the event vehicles. (It appears on some magazine front covers too.) After that, it was used for the International Selections at Eastnor, loaned out to various journalists and then used around the Eastnor estate until it was de-fleeted. Here are a few more pictures:

HR_41201.jpg

I purchased KGK, with all the kit, when it was de-fleeted but all of the kit had to be removed for legal reasons. At the moment, I'm using it as a family car and as such, I haven't re-fitted all of the equipment. While the G4 equipment has been off the car, I have taken the opportunity to get most of it re-powder coated. Currently, I have re-fitted the shelves, bins & guard in the rear, rear tank guard, steering guard, winch tray and winch. I have the following stored in my garage and will be included in the sale:

• Heavy Duty front springs
• Raised air intake (RAI).
• Original N/S wing with cutaway for RAI.
• Roof rack
• 4x Warn lights
• Plaques
• Door stickers
• 6x event wheels with Goodyear MTRs
• Spare front light guards & grille.

This is what KGK looks like now:

Hi.

I walked away from buying a 90 from him. If you do an HPi check I would think it has a cat D or C on it.

He buys damaged LandRovers and puts the bits together and makes something

This is only from info I have found out while in the process nearly buying from him.

Well I sent them an email querying the fact it is a TD5 not a V8, no reply yet and not really expecting one TBH.

Nick, if you want to donate to the club you could always join, you don't have to have a G4 to become a member we welcome anyone with an interest. Membership details are here, either that are send a PM to "marco g4 range rover" our treasurer he can tell you how to donate.

Cheers,

I think this was the one that was at Newark landrover show.

Shell from scrapped workshop vehicle fitted to accident damaged standard D2.

There were 6 2003 workshop vehicles. 2 USA, 2 SA, 2 Aus

2 sold back to USA in 2004

1 known scrapped possibly one above

3 unknown history but UK reg vehicles

Hello all, many thanks for the messages - I have more history from RST - I am fully aware that they get Cat C/D write-off's and salvage other bodies to place on them.

I have a history (of sorts) from them regarding the history of the chassis - it was a White Police D2 that was not registered in any Catagory as wasn't written off, and I am told it is truely an original G4 body that has been transplanted (I am open to correction, but I am told it was used as the security vehicle?). I have been told to look for the original stickering under the passenger seat that has original chassis number hiding there!

Whilst this is not an original vehicle in purist terms (and I would never try to claim it as a authentic G4 - more a replica?), I am tempted so much that I am going to have another look.

I am going with a new 'head' on - thanks to you all here. If I progress with the sale I will keep you all abreast. I am printing membership of in any case!

I have seen Mark's beast - It looks perfect, but in all honesty I would rather have the TD5 option for daily use!

Adrian's digging has been really appreciated as well!

All the best - Nick

Well the if the bodyshell is genuine at least part of the vehicle has seen active service! Perhaps it was originally one of the vehicles Equicar broke for Land Rover, see thread: http://www.g4ownersclub.com/forum/Topic2830-17-1.aspx?Highlight=equicar

You also have the benefit of the majority of the vehicle being ex-police and so should have been well looked after. It would be interesting to know what the vehicle is registered as now, as it should be registered with the details of the Police D2 as the majority of the mechanical parts have come from that vehicle. Get a good price, and an understanding insurer and I think you'll have a good buy!:)

Well, I bought the vehicle after spending a couple of hours talking to Richard at RST. I am Exceedingly happy with the disco - it is as new (as expected) and had no major jobs (except needing a washer pump).

I want to offer a retort to those that were questioning RST's rebuilding of Cat C/D vehicles.

I checked out a number of their 'in work' defenders and was impressed with their build quality and general prep. I am aware that there are those who would shy from the CAT's due to insurance being perhaps higher, but remember that these cars are not 'dodgy'. From my discussion it is presented to me that they are fully checked out independantly and in accordance with DVLA regs. Remenber that there are thousands of trasnplanted bodies, engines and modded 90 & 110's out there!

My hybrid is not CAT registered - its a Police 02 TD5 (have old Docs) and written history. I have the VIN present under the passenger door - It is to my knowledge a gen G4 body (I will get onto validating this when I join but know it came from Equicar...)

Anyhooo.. back to my 'DV8'... Full electric front seats, working dual zone heating, LR satnav radio (Terrible reception cos of buffalo board on roof and no satnav disc...). I got a set of leather seats from Equicar to fit in the back - removing the 'commercial' metal screen behind drivers, and the buffalo board liner... all now sitting in my garage waiting for me to sell. The 20' RR alloys give it a perfect ratio, and the MTR's set them off a treat. WARN winch works (has original wire hauser though)... Had great fun (read mess) waxoyling every inch of subframe - used over 5 litres - after a powerwash...

I spotted a 110 G4 (in a convoy?) near stonehenge on the way back from Devon on Sunday. Did a good MPG (24) fully loaded (2 up front + FULL rear) doing 70 (and a little more on M3).. What do you V8 lovers do MPG wise?

Right - enough said. Take care - hopefull be doing formal intro's after payday!
