MT/R's On road behaviour?

https://forum.g4ownersclub.com/Topic13921.aspx

By Gr4eme - 29 Oct 2009

Hi all.

Just ordered a full set of MT/r's for the winter:cool:

I Realise they are 90/10 off road tyres.

Can anyone who has these fitted already tell me what they are like 'on road'.

I am now getting a bit nervous about putting my pride and joy on the road with what is in effect mud tyres.:ermm:

Cheers

Graeme.

The MTRs are great on road. Like any tyre designed for off-road use, they are slightly noiser and the rolling resitance will make a slight difference in fuel economy, but they do look good on the G4 vehicles!:)

Cheers Stu.

Fuel economy!!!!!

When I ordered the tyres the supplier phoned me and warned me about the on road capabilities of the tyres.

Wasn't worried until then!

The biggest concern for them is the speed rating.

You'd need to be some kind of muppet to be doing over 100mph in a 2.5 tonne 4X4 even with Z rated tyres. :w00t:

Hi Graeme,

I've also had no probs with the MTRs. Yes definately noisey, and thirstier, but very well behaved on the motorways. Just returned from Spain and France driving at 130kph for some sections (nearly missed the ferry) with four pax and fully loaded roof and boot and felt v. secure. Wouldn't want to have to turn too quickly like that!!

As for looks, they look fab, and are often mentioned by admirers. They get my thumbs up.

Enjoy

Thanks Rich.

Starting to feel confident again about my decision to change to MT/r's.

Anyone got pic's of them on their G4?

Can't wait to get them fitted now!!

Xmas has come early for me :w00t::w00t::w00t:

Hi Graeme,

From what I have found with the MT/R's they are ok in the dry but do get a bit slidey in the wet when pushed especially if on a high performance vehicle. There are plenty of club vehicles running these tyres possibly with various stories of performance but on the whole they are a very good tyre.

Remember though that they are are an OFF ROAD biased tyre and they will NOT be as good on the road as a road biased tyre. The vehicle should be driven accordingly when on the road bearing in mind the grip level difference.

Hi ,

I had MTR's on my RRS and they behaved impecably even on a pretty rapid car.

To be fair as I knew I had them on I did not push the car to its grip limits especially in the wet - less tyre in contact with the road than normal road biased tyres - you could get them to moan abit at roundabouts !

Saying that they are a slightly softer compound so do grip better in some circumstances.

Find a nice wet empty road & find out the limit before you ever need then in normal use.

I say enjoy

Thanks everyone, feel a lot better now.

The reason I'm changing them is to go to Aviemore in January to see the mushing.

I've posted a thread inviting you all, would be a great place for a meet.

Don't used them they are dangerous. For everybody's safety I take them off you for a few pounds and take them to The Netherlands. As mine are almost worn and need a new set.

No kidding they are good. You really have to push it to feel a difference.

Related to this I suppose, what are people opinion on a good on road tyre for a fully laden 110? Going to do a Europe trip this summer and don't think the MT's are as suitable for a long on road trip as they are for other uses.

Wouldn't mind something with the capability to green-lane/dirt track at the same time as we will be taking some routed through the alps that will be a bit rough.

There's no doubt that the MT/R is an excellent tyre both on & off road.

Just watch your speed though... The tyre is 'Q' rated so IIRC it's rated to 93mph.

for a trip round Europe i would fit bf goodrich all terrain do 40,000 miles on a set good enough off road and very good on road with little noise. As for the MTR's if i had to use the same car for on and off road i would have two sets of wheels and tyres and swap them over for winter use 93 mph is not enough with a v8 under the bonnet and a heavy right foot. All you have to watch is town centers where they put sets of block paving half way round a corner that is tarmac in the wet its not great.

I had BFG MT's under my Camel. That is empty 2500 kg so I was most of the time overweight. I never had issue with them and on a real wet road I love MT's. I work in the oilfield and drive a lot through europe mostly southern Germany and Austria.

On my G4 nI have 2 set's Wrangler HP's and MT's I currently drive the HP's as much as possible I will use them till they are worn and replace them with real winter tyres. My MT's will be on most off the year and the winter tyres only when needed.

I rate the MT's higher on roads with water on them. The MT's are very good against aquaplanning the HP might have a little better grip on a wet road without standing water but I feel more safe with the MT's.

Question: What is the difference driving say 5000km during a europeen trip compared to driving 5000km in the UK. It's probably longer stretches in one go but further there are no differences.

Speed references. The first version were only to 90 Miles I believe the newer are for a higher speed.

Have had MTR's on the 'Silver G4' for over 2 years now and never had any problems whatsoever, and that includes a lot of fast M way driving and long trips through Europe etc. I have even done a lap of Goodwood with them on! Not worth the bother of swapping them over each time you off road IMHO unless MPG is critical to you. If you have a rack on then that's Bu**ered anyway!

LRE had them on the D4 support vehicles for the launch in Scotland and again all was fine on both fast road & mud. It's a great versatile tyre!

Mine are S rated so for 112mph which is fine. If the supplier is trying to sell you a lower speed rating then it's old stock.... Insist on the S rating.

I have an 08 G4D3 on MTR's mine  have an S rating and have done 18.000 miles since May and have had no problems i drive a lot on A roads and on motorways also use the D3 on sites in mud. I was going to get a set of road tyres  but cant see the point now they do the job fine they also look the part on a G4:P ( yes i do have a heavy right foot ) hope this helps:D

A G4 has to have MTR's on, otherwise it's just an orange D3....

And where does one get hold of a set of MTR's from / and for how much ? My usual sources of tyres aren't turning them up !! Oh and why are they 55 profile, when the car runs 50 profile as standard ??

My recently purchased RRS is running on a real mix 'n' match set, some brand new 100% road biased Vredesteins on the front and Conti Cross Contacts on the rear / spare. Considering buying a single Conti to have a full matching set, flogging the Vredesteins and picking up a spare set of rimz for MTR's.

I got my set of MTR's through Harwoods in Edenbridge.

John in Parts in very helpful (01732 863303) - tell him Andy with the G4 F2 sent you!

By Andy131 - 31 Dec 2009

Hi Mole

What size tyres did you get? What size of wheels should be fitted in original trim?

Mines fitted with 18" wheels, but I have a feeling 16" with a set of AT2 would be closer to my style of driving. 18" wheels are already showing signs of scuffing as the smaller side wall brings the wheel rim into contact very easily.

Andy,

Wheels are 17" 5-spoke split - I think these were used on Se spec vehicles. Part number LR001153 according to my invoice

Tyres are 235-65/17 GYWMTR

This combination not only look good on the vehicle but are great off-road. On road there is some road-noise compared with the 18" road tyres fitted as standard but they do not cause me any other problems.

Hope this helps!

hi

i have gone through 2 sets of MTRs on my disco2 G4, generally they are a good tyre and do perform well in snow etc. On road they are fine but can wear on the edges ( they shave off at angles) so it is essential to get the tracking checked to get the best out of them. When they are worn on the edges beware if turning tightly in the wet as they do have a tendencey to lose grip on wet tarmac ( so ease off speed on tight turns). the other major issue i had with the set i inherited when I bought the car was the walls cracked and could have delaminated (I have seen this on a G4 disco 3) possibly as they are reinforced and a tough compound if they a stretched though over inflation and under inflation over a period of time they break down--keep an eye on the inside walls I caught mine in good time. (I have a set of MTRs on rims just for off road, shows and poor weather but don't use them much)

I now run on Good year HP all weathers which are excellent in all road conditions ( also brilliant in snow i use them in the alps regularly in conditions like we are experiencing now and great- I use chains if slowing is becoming a problem - more damage to vehicles here through people thinking they are Ok cos the vehicle has great traction ( not much good if you cant stop effectively!!) MPG is greatly improved with these. So i would recommend having the 2 set option but do check for angled blocky wear on the MTR's

do have fun

kind regards
