Number Plate copying

Hi peps, a real warning going out here. seems that there is an increase of number plate copying going on lately with the number plates being pulled off of car owners websites like this and put onto other vehicles that get parking, speeding tickets etc. as we all have pics of our cars on here think it would be a wise idea to blank out any shots that have the number plates in to avoid us getting caught out.

pics of cars loaded onto sites like photobucket etc can easily be found on search engines such as google as i tried it out and to my horror came up with my car with the number plate in full view.

lets try to put a stop to this illeagal activity going on.

Funny you should mention this, happened 4 weeks ago to my brother in law. Norfolk police stopped a transporter owned by eastern europeans, turned out his passat had been cloned, along with some others, got details off autotrader website seemingly.Took a statement, not heard anything since

yes we had one of the company vans cloned and got a speeding ticket but the police took no further action as it was cloned onto a merc smart car with a picture from the speed camera, and the van was only two weeks old.

It's an interesting topic this one.  On the one hand it makes sense to mask a number plate.  But I've just been onto the Autotrader site for example and there are plenty of number plates on view.  Personally, being able to see the number plate has enabled me to find old pictures of my car.  Skimming through a couple of magazines also you can pull out any number of plates,  so is it a problem?  For me I'm going to hope nobody is silly enough to try and clone a bright orange defender, for now anyway..

we had one of our site dumpers cloned and the police sent speeding ticket 40 something  in a 30 we had a good laugh and sent back as it only does 12 to 14 mph:w00t:

One of the reasons for leaving the number plate showing is so that when considering buying a car you have the chance to have it HPI'd. Some unscrupulous traders , use this as a defence when selling a car on the V Car. By not divulging it has been in an accident, you have been given the chance to check it before buying it, as the number plate has been prominantly displayed.

there was a police program on this subject the other night on bbc about number plate cloning.gave some very good advise but overall very good idea covering all or most part of reg numbers of vehicles on any website.

cloning is a more prevailant issue with the mass produced euro boxes, where any blue ford/peugeot/ renault would look the same, however the tangiers orange and loaded kit are a bit of a giveaway when the letters drop on the doormat. its inconvienient to remember that you weren't in some far flung corner of the uk but resolvable

It's something I've often thought about and under normal circumstances I try and remove the numberplates of my cars off any photos posted to the web, but as others have said here I'm less concerned with the RRS. If someone's daft enough to clone the plate belonging to a bright orange RRS then more fool them.

A couple of years ago I had a London speeding fine land on my doorstep.

Specified black Freelander and my reg, considering mine was a black Freelander I was curious, so I asked for a look at the picture - turns out it was a eurobox.  They just get the reg from computer recognition, look up the vehicle details from Swansea, and drop it in the post.. So it may well say orange Land Rover on the ticket, just ask to see the photo.

I was in Cape Town at the time - hence my curiousity, the police dropped the case ;)
