2005 D3 G4 stalling

Hi, Could do with some help on a problem with our 2005 D3 G4.

We've had the vehicle from a dealer in July 2005 with an extended warranty:cool: (another 4 months to go), and had it LPG converted about 2 years ago. We've had no engine problems till recently when the engine started stalling when the foot was taken off the accelerator. Usually the rev counter will rapidly home into the tickover speed of 750 rpm. However, the revs when taking your foot off the accelerator will now drop to 500rpm and the engine will either stall or recover. (Can be a bit dangerous when approaching give way signs and the engine cuts out along with all power to steering and brakes!!!!:w00t::cool:). After a couple of hours investigation the local LR dealership declared the problem to be related to the gas conversion. After 4 days of meticulously going over the gas conversion the LPG garage are unable to find any fault with the gas conversion and are suggesting we go back to the LR people to see what they say. They do confirm that the engine is cutting out.

Googling Landrover D3 stall, does bring up one or two other people with similar issues in vehicles not gas converted.

Anyone experienced anything similar or have any suggestions on how to approach the LR dealership.

Thanks

Andy

It's the usual troubleshooting things you need to go through and remove the unknowns from the equation.

Is this happening when you're on gas or petrol?

Run it on petrol for a while and see if you get the same problem. If the problem is there when running on petrol, it'll be a lot easier for a garage to look at it & diagnose the fault as it's effectively "standard" while on petrol.

However, if it is only happening when running on LPG, guess where the problem is likely to be... ;)

FWIW - LPG is very hard on the engine & HT components. As a first port of call, change the air & gas filters and change all of the HT leads to see if that helps.

PS - You know all that money you saved by having that LPG conversion??? You're about to blow it all... (LPG conversions can be a false economy);)

My 2005 RRS is LPG converted and a couple of times recently it's stalled, but this coincided with it being low on gas both times. It's also due a service on the LPG system so I'm thinking the 2 are related. It doesn't stall on petrol, although it does 'hunt' slightly on occasion when on tickover.

Does it kick the EML on at all or does that stay out ? Mine's very sensitive poor thing, pops the light on at the first sign of anything wayward. Sadly it seemed to put it on more when it's running on petrol than gas, having had it investigated by LR they found it running lean when on petrol, since they sorted that out it's been fine.

Who fitted the LPG conversion out of interest and how many miles has it done since being done ?

I have a FFRR on Gas and a volvo S60 factory fit bi fuel for the 1000 miles for work / week. If the temp is low ie -2 or below the tank will not gas off before the float switch tells the engine it is out of gas, so switches back to petrol and both cars show the signs which you describe.

My FFRR runs better on gas than petrol, LR should have continued their development of this rather than the TDV8 I can get 20mpg to at 58p a litre.

Mark

Out of interest, who converted yours ? I'm only getting about 15mpg out of my RRS on LPG at the moment....

The company that did mine have gone under..... but it's a BRC running very lean according to Landrover plugging in their computers, but the engine sound smoother on gas than petrol, I normally get around 18 mpg -up to 20mpg driving very careful @ a constant 60mph but when I had it it London i was down to 13mpg hence the Volvo....

Thanks, I don't feel so hard done by now :P

When we have previously discussed the mpg figures the FFRR seems to be a couple of MPG better than the rrs and the d3, my ffrr does 18mpg average and 20-22 on the motorway if i leave it in 6th on the command shift. But then if i am driving normally it can show 8-12mpg on the computer and thats on petrol.

average on my D3 V8 motorway was 22; but i once got 24 from Driffield to Coventry @ 56mph behind a lorry

I got 40mpg from the D3 on gas going through the 15miles of 50mph limit road works on the M1, soon dropped though as I floored it to make up for the time lost.

As for the stalling saga. The landrover dealership couldn't find out what the problem was and reckoned that it needed a new ECU which would not be covered under the warranty as we had had it converted to gas:w00t:, so we took it back to the gas installers who fixed a slight leak & tuned it up. It was still stalling so they ran it on petrol for 50miles coz they thought that the ECU had learned this bad habit. When we picked it up they only charged us for the petrol they put in, £30. They had even given us a courtesy car & a load of gas so that we could go home, because they needed it for a lot longer than originally thought.

We spoke to the landrover dealership who told us that for the ECU to kick this bad habit we would have to wait 3 weeks. It's been fine and all it cost was fuel to get to Durham, and £30.:satisfied:
