Dose any one know if there is a isolator switch fitted for the winch on a Discovery 3 as mine is totaly dead ?
By wiggs - 14 May 2010

There is a solinoid fitted down behind the battery ...i would start by checking there .

You have to remove the battery to get to it

By Big_Dave - 15 May 2010

Thanks I will check it out

Give me a shout if you're still struggling, I've become a bit of a winch expert recently!!

Was it working and has it worked in the past or has this just occured.
By Big_Dave - 21 May 2010

Thanks everyone for your help I have been in contact with the dealer who sold the car to me who said the winch is still under warranty and he will be happy to sort it out so watch this space. The answer to the question it has never worked under my ownership?
By adesg4 - 21 May 2010

Hope they sort it out for you.

Is there any special servicing you should do on the winch from time to time?

Is there any special servicing you should do on the winch from time to time?

USE IT!

Lack of use kills them! Electrical conections corrode, springs in bushes corrode, lubricants do not get moved round... Etc. Result: does not work the first time you try to use it (normally in front of a crowd!)

Seems I will be ok them.

The way I keep getting stuck at the moment its getting lots of use.

The biggest issue I have is I cannot turn the lever to freespool. Anyway, dealer is going to look at it as it's under warranty.

Hello everyone who helped with my winch problems the car was returned to the dealer who found it was disconnected (by LR?) in now works ok

THANKS

Sorry to repeat this subject but i also am suffering the same issue... I have recently bought Phil Newmans G4 D3 Tiger and have found the winch totally inactive.
Apparently LR removed the winch rope (due to liability reasons) and according to Phil it has never worked.. indeed he was not even supplied the remote lead.

I have ordered the replacement lead and plasma rope and was ready to fit only to find the unit totally dead. I am hoping that i was missing the isolator switch somewhere but on a cursory look cannot see one anywhere...

Without taking the front of the car apart does anyone know where either the isolator is fitted or where LR is likely to have disconnected the power supply?

Any help would be incredibly well recieved........

Also on a secondary note the front and rear Challenge G4 plates mounted ordinarily on the roof racks have been removed from both the front and rear of the vehicle. Does anyone have a pair laying in a drawer anywhere that they would consider selling or are there any replicants out there??

Many thanks Ian

Further to last post... spent the day under the car... moved the battery and got to the solenoid and all is well and still connected.. Then traced it back and all the relevant wires appear to be present and correct.... Now scratching my head....

Only slight query as there is another forum that questions whether the right remote lead is being used... Mine was missing and thus ordered another through Gigglepin...This is a brand new Warn remote but on inspection only has 5 pins on the plug. The female plug on the D3 has six wires going to it..

I am led to believe that the genuine remote lead for the G4's had a light fitted within the unit...My question is a : Is this true? and b : Are these leads interchangible? i.e. Is the sixth wire only powering the bulb in the remote handset or have i been sold totally the wrong remote lead which will never work?

A challenge to you petrolheads? Anyone who can assist will be the best person ever!!

Hi Ian, the remote handset for my winch (2008 D3) doesn't have any light in it, Haven't looked at the wiring in detail but it just appears to be a simple 2 way switch - winch out / winch in.

As far as I remember the only winch that used the controller with the light was the 9.5Ti. Have you traced the main power cables from the winch to the battery are continuous. You can apply power from a slave battery to the terminals on the motor and connect the controller this should tell you if it is battery connection related.
Could be the motor has got water in (sealing on Warn winches is rubbish).
Try another controller and see if there is clicking from the solenoids.
By Farmer Chalk - 15 Jan 2013

Thanks for your responses.. yes i've checked the wiring under the battery to the solenoid and both the wires are solid and continuous... is there a low voltage wire that is protected by any sort of fuse or relay? All the wires appear to be correct and in place and nothing obviously tied up and out of the way. All of the terminals in the remote socket are in good condition....

Rather frustrating really!

My 2008 D3 winch is also out of action at the moment. It was working and then it suddenly stopped last summer as I was winding it in.

As said before, the seal is rubbish and you should strip it down and overhaul it, being 4 years old now it is time, otherwise it will deteriorate rapidly - there is a overhaul kit you can get. So decided to take on the whole job. I took mine apart and have overhauled it now, it certainly needed it. You will be shocked to see the state inside. rust and debris.
However, mine is still not working. there is no power coming to any of the 2 pos terminals. I can see a bank of solenoids behind the grill just by the intercooler, but access is from the bottom. My next task is to check these out. The issue I have is that the bolts for the protective plate are seized and it is a bigger job now. I have already sheared 2 bolts! Hence parked the job for now.
I would advise anyone with a winch to use them regularly and also make a note to service them regularly if you you want a reliable and long serving winch.
By Farmer Chalk - 16 Jan 2013

Spooky but thats where i've got to now... i had all the battery out, A frame off, front grill off and checked all the wires above the winch which looked perfect and have got to the same position as you dreading taking the sump guard off just to get to the row of electrical connectors mounted on the radiator crossbar...

Think it would be right to have the whole lot serviced but i don't think it has ever been used in anger! Where did you get your service kit and how much was it?

By Farmer Chalk - 29 Jan 2013

Right everyone.... I think we finally got to the bottom of it regarding the winch! Finally gave up and took the car to Gigglepin in Tonbridge to get them to sort it.
Apparently the 9.5 Xp that Land Rover ordered from Warn is unique in that it does have six pins in the socket to the remote lead. Thus the remote we have on the G4's must have six pins....
I was told this is no longer available! You may remember my car was not sold with a winch controller lead and so I purchased a new replacement from Warn. This only has 5 pins to it and did not work although the winch itself was absolutely fine! Gigglepin have reworked my winch and placed a small on/off toggle switch now on the grill so I can isolate it when not in use!
So I now have a working winch again! Hooray! just want the snow back again now!
Moral of the story ? Don't lose your winch lead!

As an aside anyone missing their original winch cover squibs063 on eBay had some for sale which are genuine Warn parts for £20 which I think was a bargain! They fit all models apparently!
By stu_007 - 29 Jan 2013

Would they fit a D2 do you think??
By Farmer Chalk - 29 Jan 2013

Good question, the label says defender/discovery on it and the label dates to 2008. The part number is warn 69780 AO and 69782 if that helps. It has elastic acted straps on both sides and the top and bottom edges and is cut to fit the warn 9.5 . It also has two little slits at the front for the number plate holder! It's worth giving it a try and flogging it to a D3 owner if not at that price!

Ian, have a chat with Devon 4x4
By Farmer Chalk - 2 Feb 2013

i wish i had found them in the first place.....brilliant many thanks....
By lr101fc - 23 Apr 2013

My winch packed up when I was moving my lightweight. Had been working OK up to that.
Removed it from the tray, the plastic vent pipe was broken, the winch internals were full of dust, corrosion and the end seals fell apart.
I dropped it off to Devon 4x4 when I was on way back from a family trip, my thinking is they have the expertise and access to all required parts - it's always the little clip, bolt, nut, seal that you haven't ordered that needs replacing.
So I'm waiting for a call to let me know it's all better.
