I am in the process of purchasing a G4 RR Sport (4.4 V8) and was just wondering what sort of effect the G4 items like the snorkel, roof rack and M/TR tyres have on fuel economy?
Without the spot lights and plaque the roof rack looks quite streamlined to be honest. However I imagine the tyres will cause a lot of extra drag. Does the snorkel have any effect?
Just be interested to know - cheers!

A few members seem to think the tyres lose 3 mpg and the rack 2 mpg which is probably about right as i get 11-19mpg from the d3 with all the kit on, but a g4 with out the kit looks terrible. Also my d3 is for sale if you want something a bit more practical than a RRS. I have always fancied getting a g4 RRS but put off by the size of the boot...

hi mike c
dont want to put you off
BUT WHY BUY A G4 AND THEN TAKE ALL KIT OFF !!!!!
if your concerned about fuel why just not buy a normal landrover ,or a more fuel efficent car
sorry to moan but dont understand why people buy a G4 landrover then destroy it by taking kit off !!!

Thanks Mark! I don't really need the extra boot space or 7 seats, hence going for a Sport. My brother is considering a D3 though, how much is yours up for? Is it a V8 or TDV?

Mike_C (5/2/2012) Just be interested to know - cheers! ....not stripping it all off, I was just intrigued to know! The winch, ladder and snorkel will definitely stay on permanently. The car has two sets of wheels, originals with M/TR tyres and a second set with road tyres - the latter will be on the car most of the time, the G4 wheels/tyres will be fitted for greenlaning, my trip to Morocco, shows, etc. The roofrack I'm undecided but will probably keep it on most of the time, perhaps without the spotlights though as the roofrack itself looks relatively streamlined!! Out of interest, can you still get the M/TR tyres and if so, where from? The ones on thr original wheels are pretty worn unfortunately.

The LR mpg figures for the 4.4L v8 RRS are
Urban - 13.5mpg
Combined - 19mpg
Extra Urban - 22.3mpg
This is without all the extra weight and drag a fully specced G4 vehicle adds on.
Roofracks tend to increase consumption by 10-12%, off road tyres by 10-20%.
So with these figures you would possibly get around 14-15mpg average with all the kit on depending of course on how you drive it.
Removing all the kit will only give you the 19mpg average anyway.
If you remove all the kit and then drive quicker because it is lighter and handles better, you will save nothing.
At todays average petrol price £1.41 / Litre
miles/ mpg Cost
10000 15 £4276 Fully kitted
10000 18 £3563 Tyres/ wheels swapped only
10000 19 £3376 No Kit
Difference Max £900 = £2.47 / day
Possibly best to swap wheels as and when required. You also do not need to store a large roofrack and all the other kitand then have to refit when you want to attend a show
Please note these figures are approximate and will vary with driving type and style.

For a D2 4.0L V8 the official figures (LOL) give combined of 16.9mpg so you are not far off.

Ok. I've still got lamba sensor problems, which I think don't help.
But hopefully will have them sorted on the 24th, as taking it to Stuart Armson.

Thanks Ades!
15mpg is pretty poor!! I'm hopeful, my journey is 80 miles twice a week on relatively flowing A roads all the way, so I should get reasonable economy even with my slightly heavy right foot!!

I don't think it's makes that much difference on the Defenders although they're not exactly slippery in the first place. I know I don't have the "works" roof rack but still have a big roof box.
On BFG AT's with the box on it'll get 29mpg round the Lakes but with the box off low 30's are possible. It does have a GKN overdrive though. Compared to other td5's it seems quite frugal. Even with trailer/trialer being towed which is about 2.2ton being pulled it still manages 25mpg on a long run.
Progress is glacial compared to my wifes Puma 90 but the 90 on road tyres can still barely manage 31mpg.

I've just had my D3 remapped with a superchip bluefin & swapped the MTR's for a set of 22" Range Rover Sport road wheels. The main reason for this is to see what increase there is in fuel economy.
Currently averaging between 22.9Mpg to 24.2 Mpg tank by tank (26.8Mpg on a run up to Manchester) so as I am doing the same run again this weekend to see my daughter I will see that the difference in fuel economy is.....

I used to run my RRS without the rack & rear ladder, did so for 2 years / 60,000 miles
Without that lot it did ~18-19mpg at a steady speed, albeit that steady speed was usually 80+ on my run from Cardiff to Leicester each week. With the rack on at those speeds it did about 12-13mpg and the wind noise was horrific, hence me upsetting Dave and taking the rack off ;) At 70 and below it's much more economical. I run on 19" Pirelli ATR's and to be honest, I didn't notice any difference in economy between those and the road tyres it came on, nor was there an increase in road noise from the tyres. I've never bothered going back to road tyres since, especially when the ATR's lasted 50k miles and the road tyres only lasted 15k, the cost difference wasn't worth it. Now I have all the kit back on it here in Oz, bearing in mind the speed limits are lower so I'm generally trundling at 62mph (100km/h, snooooooze) or just round town at 80km/h, it's doing 17.5mpg. If I bimble along without using the cruise control I can get better than that, but boredom usually sets in. I'm getting about 450km's to a tank of fuel at the moment, so it's not too bad but if & when we do start using it for travelling I'll likely have to fit a longrange tank under the back and use my spare wheel brackets on the roofrack. I'm told the snorkel makes a difference to economy as well, but I really couldn't be arsed unsticking it from the wing and driving around with holes in the side as well for the tiny benefit I may have gained. Let's be honest here, it's a V8 petrol in a 2.7tonne barn on wheels, so it's never going to sip fuel like a vicar sips tea, it's more of a scotsman in a McEwans brewery. Besides, the V8 sounds great through the snorkel with the window down a bit

This is a diesel rather than a petrol v8 right? I have a new set of 19" rims together with Pirelli Scorpions and it has certainly saved a couple of MPGs in petrol on the urban and extra-urban (avaraging now around 16mpg urban and 18mpg on the motorway using around 80mph.
Off to the Lake District this weekend so will see how we do on the 550 mile round trip.
(I have debated doing other things, but then it is a G4 and the reason to buy it, is to have all the toys - snorkel, roof with lights and ladder, and possibly even the Goodyear MTRs... That said, when i have saved up £2k, I think I will convert to LPG)

Yup, a 2.7TDV6, looking at your figures I dont feel quite so bad now!

Hi
When I had that Disco 3 I only used Shell or BP diesel and regularly got 27- 28mpg I always had Mtr tyres and cruised on motorways with needle on 70mph.
The tyres you have fitted must be much wider than 255 which will cause more drag and increase fuel consumption go back to 255/ 55/ 19.
I am getting same fuel consumption as you with mt RRS TDV8. 23-24.5 local and up to 26.7 on motorway.

Must admit I am slowly coming to the conclusion that there is not that great a difference between the Goodyear MTRs that the G4 comes with and the Pirelli Scorpions that I have recently fitted, albeit the initial belief was that I was saving significantly on MPG and Road noise. (maybe I am driving the vehicle harder now!)
More importantly, as noted by some recently, the G4 looks better with original tyres that "mean business". . . So may get a bit more wear from the Scorpions before putting them back on eBAY and reverting back to the authentic look.
BTW: In this months, LRO Magazine it also has an article on tyres / rims and suggests Show / Specialist cars stick with the original! The money from the tyres may go some way towards the new suspension compressor that is required rather soon!
