Why Did I Bother ?

Last night I thought I would post a couple of items for sale on the forum, that I thought might have been of interest to people here.Tonight I receive an e-mail to say my post has been removed by Peter because I am not a "full member".People complain they do not get the chance to purchase items before they get put on e-bay and when you try to help this happens.Similar to the guys in the US I live to far up the map in this country to enjoy the benefits that full membership offers.Due to the mileage I cover I could not afford to run the G4 disco 3 that I covet, probably even if it was run on LPG.I have been interested in , followed , and collected items of interest from the challenge since it was first advertised in 2002 and joined this forum soon after it began. My opinion is you are losing your way by marginalising enthusiasts like myself...................rant over

I don't think its a rant at all.

Please make sure you let me know when you advertise your stuff on e-bay.

By yakman - 11 Mar 2008

Hi Pete I agree the forum should be open,to anyone selling g4 stuff.

regards yakman

By Chrisallse - 12 Mar 2008

Put it another way chaps, the forum costs money to run and this is paid for by the 'paid up members' to repay that loyalty one of the benefits is for the PU Members to be able to sell items on the Forum. Please remember that without their contributions there would not be a Forum or Club

Best regards Chris

By Mark & Melanie - 12 Mar 2008

It costs money to run even it is just used by the club I think we should allow all G4 stuff to be sold on the site as it is in the interest of the club......

you also have the added bonus of knowing where stuff is that is being sold.:D
By Toger - 12 Mar 2008

I don't agree with you there mate, there are loads of 4x4 clubs that dont charge for membership, and theres some that do.

What I own is not an indicator of what I can and cannot afford:cool:

By TJ101 - 12 Mar 2008

Most CLUBS whether 4x4 or not charge a membership fee, i do not know of one that's free, Local motor Club, Yacht Club, Porsche Club, etc etc,

Most forums are free if you what them to be, but cost money to run ! and most asked for a donation, like LR4x4 as you know

Most of this forum is only accessible to Member only,, and that's the way it should be :), a benefit for current contributing members,

However, maybe !! the for sale section should be a open section, as that may benefit paying members

By Toger - 12 Mar 2008

See. it's good to talk:D
By VA - 13 Mar 2008

Since the site has become restricted I rarely invest the time to post on this site. I am a member of various sites and none of these have subscription, instead they rely on voluntary donations, this system works because when someone finds something useful from visiting the site that person feel obliged to donate. The G4 owners community is a small one and the majority of technical information can be found elsewhere - my view is that the site can not offer value for money. What you guys should do is charge for specific information such as car details, event details or merchandise. Just my thoughts, shame really as I like the previous way the site was run.

All

As we  can see there are a lot of different views on the subject and consensus does not seem obvious within the club.

Could I also just remind that that we are under a transition period  with a New Comittee in place for not even a week.

Having said that, we posted (within 3 days after the new Committee being officially transitioned) a summary of the key actions points we will  undertake to address the most important issues under a new section on the forum  "Committee Notice Board". Within that  post we  had--

"3- Membership Matters: Within two weeks (24th March), all Committee members will provide ideas to Paul on how to improve value of the membership for new and current, UK and international members. Respecting the same deadline, we welcome ideas from all club members, which should be sent to the club's Secretary -Augusto, who will then consolidate them all and report back to Paul."

I will take note of all points of view in these thread and put them forward to Paul and the rest of the Committee.

By robgeev - 13 Mar 2008

So, how much to join the club then?

Rob.

By The OC (Augusto) - 13 Mar 2008

Rob,

Welcome to the forum.

The current cost for the club membership is £30/year. We should be re-opening shortly for new membership,  so please keep an eye for it.

The Membership Officer is Paul  Burt (pjb), so please send him a note if you are  interested and  have a look at the "Joining the Club" section of the forum for more details.

As you read  from this tread we are working towards providing more value to members and we expect to report on that soon.

Hope you will also join us!

OK here's my 2p's worth. I agree with and see the issues that everyone has listed above regarding membership. BUT for those of us "over the pond" and in SA and AUS. This is really the only place we get to be involved in the club. We would also like history and technical info on the vehicles and some of us are involved at other levels in G4. I don't think we've ever said that we wouldn't pay for the forum or the club, what we're saying is that it shouldn't be the same as someone who reaps the full benifits of being on the spot in the UK with all that entails. For example UK members get the benifit of free entry into shows like Billing if they are on a club stand. That right there repays the 30 quid membership fee to an individual who is actively involved.

Obviously we can't see that benifit be we do have a lot to give to the club. Thats why I suggested an associate membership - and plenty of clubs have that facility. In effect it would be a forum use fee for "foreigners". Just make sure we can pay by paypal. Remember 30 quid is $60 dollars and that in real terms to those of us who earn in dollars equates to 60 quid which by any standards is expensive. I know because I am a brit living in the US.

BTW I'm happy to coordinate things in the US for the club if its too much from the UK. Also - this isn't by any means a rant!:D

How about honourary membership for ex G4 competitors and staff? People are happy to help with a wealth of knowledge, but not inclined to pay for the privilege..   Works well with the CT owners club.
By xtc - 13 Mar 2008

XTC, We do have ex event, event organisers as honorary members

Can I be one of those then please!:)

By Peter Jarrett - 17 Mar 2008

What he said!! absolutely no point me 'joining' for the amount of relevant threads, I mainly used to browse but £30? that's nearly half a tank of fuel or three hours worth of beer tokens FFS!

To me , the benefits of being a member will , i am sure be worth more that 140 odd miles, and that's if you are running a taxi engined G4 :w00t: even less with a proper engine :D
By xtc - 19 Mar 2008

I think what VA, tfc and myself are trying to get across is that there are a lot of people out here with a wealth of knowledge of G4 and it's vehicles, but are not G4 vehicle owners, or particularly wish to get involved in any G4 activities, but could answer a whole load of questions on the event and D3's in particular. Whilst pleased to help, paying for the privilege is not very tempting... Seems to be the clubs loss to me.  I have provided a lot of info to Darren G which I hope was useful, and TFC is the UK's leading independent specialist on modifying D3's.

It's all for fun, main thing is to enjoy the toys while we still can.               Roll on 2009 and another set of vehicles!

PS  Our Silver Torq Tuned oil burning G4's are only a second slower to 60 than the V8... and 22mpg combined, 30 on a run!!   All the 2009 fleet are diesels.  :crying:

xtc

when the club was first set up we were advised not to pester the "names" from the 03 and 06 challenges, information was sparse for the 03 event and somewhat better documented for 06 although by no means complete or perfect.

the fee for membership was set out as a commitment from members who were percieved as wanting to belong to a like minded body. just having access to the forum promotes a take it or leave it attitude and quite rightly some pepole only need the forum to check on a vehicle reg or chassis number and may well be totally disinterested in off roading or socialising.

therefore the balance will always be in a state of flux and not everything will be of interest or benefit to every member.

hopefully yourself and other insiders and "names" will offer information and access to records for the benefit of all

martin

Hi Martin,

I'm glad to help all I can, and hopefully for future events too. My point was that we cannot now see what people want to know..Think I've probably been drained of anything useful to you by now anyway!

Let's end this thread and no doubt bump into you to all at some event during the year.

Cheers, Richard.

By Peter Jarrett - 20 Mar 2008

Hi All,

Right; following a quick straw poll of the committee we're going to open the For Sale section up for Forum Members to be able to view as a trial period.

For now, only paid up 'Club Members' can post new items in the section, but now at least everyone can see whats available so hopefully this will help.

Obviously discussions continue about other changes to membership for overseas members etc....

As some have indicated that they want to know when G4 cars are up for sale. It is with a very heavy heart that my G4 Discovery 3 is up for sale and has gone on ebay. BL54OYG. My wife has a new company Disco arriving in 2 weeks (lucky her) and I am having to make the sacrifice and trade down for a while. I shall keep my eye out for a replacement in 3 years time when surely it will be my turn. If you do fancy a look at mine type in landrover and orange , being useless at ebay I messed up the title missing the G4. I have put some great pictures of the car in Bolivia which a couple of you kindly helped me track down. Please let it go to a good home I have enjoyed 36k of happy motoring. kind regards Nick
