Needing some guidance - the paint is flaking off the.left hand side of my winch (Warn 9.5 on Disco 3). Paint on main body of winch is perfect but on the ribbed section it's flaking off and metal undernearh has powdery corrosion (magnesium?) Any suggestions as to how I clear this up and repaint it - undercoat and what type of paint? Thanks

Hi, I have the same problem, in fact the winch, the removable number plate panel and winch mount are all in need of attention.
Not really planning to do anything at the moment, but my original thought for the winch "cap" was removing it from the winch and getting it sand blasted. Not sure if its magnesium as you say, aluminium or an alloy, but a light sand blast would shift it beautifully, then an a decent spray aluminium primer and finally black/dark grey top coat should do the trick.
Acids might work, but messy, and the corrosion isn't just superficial, so you might end up pitting the surface even more.
Quite a rewarding job I'd imagine... time time time
Let us know how you get on
