Dear All,
I am new to this group and not yet a full member but hopefully soon.
I wanted to ask your collective advice. Is it possible to authenticate if a Discovery 2 is a original G4 by its VIN number,
I don’t know if it was used in the challenge, was a G4 car sold direct to market or possibly a counterfeit of sorts. Any way to identify the providence would be of great help.
The number is SALLTGM884A831589. It is a left hand drive, Td5 manual gearbox.
Kind Regards

I would really appreciate if someone in this forum could help me. Several people have pointed me to this group to seek assistance in identifying and authenticating my G4.
Many thanks

It is the right colour - possibly an Edition - not event car. https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lookup/SALLTGM884A831589

They won't reply to you or help in any way unless you pay, I found this when asking about g4 cars for sale, they have a private what's app group that the chosen few communicate on and this is a dead forum. They advertise links to cars for sale on their Facebook page, I've been told as too old for Facebook, but won't help on hear.

+x Thank you very much for your response, I do appreciate it.
I have already looked it up on Vindecoderz and the colour and spec matches. I have seen so much discussion regarding standard Discos being dressed as G4s I wanted to see if there was a definitive way to identify if it was a G4 Event or Edition car I don't really mind.
Kind Regards

I did get a kind response from Keith above. Thank you for your feedback. I will look again at the FB page to see if there is a definitive way to identify if the car is an original. I will also try a Land Rover dealership here in Malmö Sweden.

Its unlikely to be an event car, as they were all V8.

Were Td5s used as support vehicles? I do believe it is an Edition car but just wanted to see if there was a way to confirm this.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for your response.
I have seen posts from individuals with G4 Td5s stating they were support cars at certain stages of the challenge. Hence my confusion.

Hi Ciaran
Any D2's that are orange would have been V8's used on the challenge in any of the 4 stages. So it sounds to me that this could be an LE that was produced as a special vehicle to celebrate the challenge.
Also just to note that event vehicles are a 2002 build as well.
Regards, Ant

Hi
All D2 support vehicles were V8’s. No TD5 D2’s were used as support vehicles, only 110’s
TD5 D2’s were G4 Limited Editions used to promote the 2003 event.

There are a couple of D2 Event cars for sale, both V8 petrol and are advertised on facebook. @Mattg has a superb example for sale and is asking £12500. There are quite a few other event vehicles for sale on social media or ebay too, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery 3.

Dear All,
We would like to ask the same question if someone can authenticate our orange 2008 Disco 3 if this is an original G4 by its VIN number?
What start position number it had? Did it go anywhere worldwide in the contest? Who was the contest driver?
The number is SALLAAA138A471719. It is a right hand drive with automatic gearbox, 2008 TD 2.7L
Was driven by previous owner (unknown name) all the way from UK down to South Africa.
Your help is greatly appreciated here!
Best regards, Alex

Hello Andi,
I attended Billing the weekend just and I have been informed it is possible once your vehicle is confirmed as authentic to apply to the DVLA to amend the log book. Mine seems to be a G4 Edition and shows GS on the log book.
Would this be correct
Cheers Perry

I believe Paul Martin has accomplished this with DVLA, I’d suggest a PM to him to understand the correct steps. I’ve asked him to comment on this thread to establish contact.

+xHello Andi, Thanks very much, I will tie up with Paul when he can.I’m on07849 941 529Cheers Hi Perry, Hope you are well. I am not 100% sure that this is what you need, but we do have a process for checking/changing the Discovery 2 V5c to document that it is a valid G4 Edition vehicle. The process was written because the majority of D2 Editions were actually logged as a GS Model. You can follow the process to request Land Rover check their database, using the VIN as an identifier, to confirm whether your vehicle is truly a G4 vehicle. They will email you a letter with the confirmation that you can send to DVLA to update your V5c.
Here is the link to the instructions: https://forum.g4ownersclub.com/Topic78275.aspx
Hope this works for you, it certainly did for myself and a few other members too. By all means make contact with me if you have any further questions.
Many thanks and good luck..

+xHello Paul,Sorry, when I click on the link below I am sent to the home page.Should I sent my details to the groups .box (registration/VIN etc) or is there a separate page to make contact with the Land Rover data base? Cheers Perry Hi Perry, Apologies, I thought that you were a member of the club so the direct link will not work for you. This is just one of the benefits you receive when you become a member. However, I have copied and pasted the process for you below. Would you be able to share some pics of your vehicle, especially the interior. If I can see that I will be able to tell you immediately whether your vehicle is a Genuine G4 Limited Edition..
This is a process for requesting DVLA to correct a V5c document to list the vehicle/model details of the V5c from a TD5 GS to a Discovery G4 LE.
Before contacting DVLA direct, read on to potentially save you many weeks waiting for a response from DVLA, only to be told they are unable to do anything without confirmation from Land Rover that your vehicle is what you say it is...:
Scenario: V5c currently lists your Land Rover Discovery as a Discovery TD5 GS model and you would like to get the document corrected by DVLA to show as a Discovery G4 LE .
DVLA will not be able to correct your V5c unless the vehicle details are verified by a letter from Land Rover on headed paper.
How to contact Land Rover requesting the information that DVLA require:
First you will need to scan, or take a picture of, the front cover and first page of your V5c document.
The scans or images can then be emailed to the following email address: lradvice@jaguarlandrover.com, with an explanation that you are in the process of requesting DVLA to correct your V5c document, which is currently listing the wrong vehicle model details on the V5c document. Can a Land Rover headed letter, with the correct vehicle/model codes be created for you to send to DVLA, in order for DVLA to complete the V5c document update please?
It may take a week or so, but you should receive a letter back from Land Rover listing 2 codes, a DVLA code and a MVRIS (Motor Vehicle Registration Information System) code.
Print the letter and send this to DVLA along with your incorrect V5c to the usual DVLA address:
DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA
This part of the process could take many weeks, so some patience is needed.
I cannot promise that this little detail will add any value to your beloved D2 G4 LE, but at least it will make it that much more special than a standard GS.
Good luck!

hello again Perry,
Well, from the pictures you have posted, I can confirm that your vehicle is a genuine Discovery 2 G4 Limited Edition. There were only 200 of these vehicles sold to the public, in Tangiers Orange, Zambezi Silver, Borrego Yellow and Java Black.
I also have one just like yours:

Apologies, only just seen this post. It is quite often very difficult to know whether you have a genuine D2 LE or not, but the best way is the seats, which used a black mogul fabric unique to the vehicle. I have attached a brochure that has a small picture of the fabric and below is a picture of a seat from my truck as well that will hopefully confirm your truck is genuine.
Good luck with your build. The D2 G4 LE's are becoming rarer almost daily so it is great to hear that you are working to keep it going.

+xMorning Paul, would the certificate apply to our vehicles too G4 LE’s Cheers Perry Hi Perry, Unfortunately not, we just don't have enough data on the G4 LE's in the club database. You may be able to get a heritage certificate from the British Motor Museum that could include some interesting facts, such as manufacturer build number as it went through the production line etc. but that is about all. I have added the link to the British Motor Museum below so you can check it out if you like..
It goes without saying that the event vehicles have a far more interesting history, such as what countries they visited, the stages they were used in, what they were used for, who drove them etc. This information can be supplied by the G4OC.

I assume they didn't even have a re-direct message to tell you that the email address was no longer available. I have added the address that I used successfully here for belt and braces.. lradvice@jaguarlandrover.com If that doesn't work, then try the address Perry has just posted. +x+x+x+xHello Paul,Sorry, when I click on the link below I am sent to the home page.Should I sent my details to the groups .box (registration/VIN etc) or is there a separate page to make contact with the Land Rover data base? Cheers Perry Hi Perry, Apologies, I thought that you were a member of the club so the direct link will not work for you. This is just one of the benefits you receive when you become a member. However, I have copied and pasted the process for you below. Would you be able to share some pics of your vehicle, especially the interior. If I can see that I will be able to tell you immediately whether your vehicle is a Genuine G4 Limited Edition.. This is a process for requesting DVLA to correct a V5c document to list the vehicle/model details of the V5c from a TD5 GS to a Discovery G4 LE. Before contacting DVLA direct, read on to potentially save you many weeks waiting for a response from DVLA, only to be told they are unable to do anything without confirmation from Land Rover that your vehicle is what you say it is...: Scenario: V5c currently lists your Land Rover Discovery as a Discovery TD5 GS model and you would like to get the document corrected by DVLA to show as a Discovery G4 LE . DVLA will not be able to correct your V5c unless the vehicle details are verified by a letter from Land Rover on headed paper. How to contact Land Rover requesting the information that DVLA require: First you will need to scan, or take a picture of, the front cover and first page of your V5c document. Print the letter and send this to DVLA along with your incorrect V5c to the usual DVLA address: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA This part of the process could take many weeks, so some patience is needed. I cannot promise that this little detail will add any value to your beloved D2 G4 LE, but at least it will make it that much more special than a standard GS. Good luck! I bought a G4 Edition D2 IN January this year and have followed the instructions to contact Land Rover but the email address just keeps failing does anyone know of another email I could try Thanks Bob Hi Bob, Just wanted to pass on my apologies - I see that you posted your message back in July, but for some reason I don't believe that I received a notification that you had responded on this channel, otherwise I would have responded sooner. Hope your G4 Edition is going well for you.. Hi Paul My G4 is going well thanks passed its MOT last week only advisory slight oil leak from the engine.the previous owner of nine years had a new chassis fitted a couple of years ago along with new pipes including power steering while the body was off so as yet have only bought a new battery for it Re

That is awesome Bob. Having an Edition with a new chassis is a great starting point for a worry free ownership. Although having said that, it is a Land Rover, so there is always something to work on or think about fixing. Would love to see some pictures of your truck if you don't mind sharing them.
