I understand that for the 2003 G4 Challenge, some of the Disco's were fitted with a radio for communications purposes. Does anyone on the board know what kind of radio would have been installed in the Disco's and where they would have been mounted? If anyone had a photo of a radio mounted in a Disco, that would be great! I lifted up the rubber pad in the center of my dash and found 4 holes that appear to be the remnants of some type of an added component to the vehicle. Thanks in advance. Dan

Hi,The radio was a Standard Vertex (Yaesu) VX2000 and the aerial was a Sigma antenna MC150. Neither are now available new. They are VHF PMR kit in the VHF 160-170Mhz band and are only licencable by companies etc. Licences are not available for private use. The radio's were used again on the 2006 event, but will be superceeded by a newer model for 2009. The Sigma aerials are no longer available which is a shame as they were a brilliant aerial. A replacement for 2009 is still to be decided. Hope that helps! Richard.

Richard,I owe you a cold one. Thank you much. Dan

Hi Dan,Have probably got an old MC150 aerial knocking about if you just wanted one for show. No good for CB etc as totally wrong band but look the part for events etc.. PM me your address if you want one. There may be some duff VX2000's about in the next few months, again fine if only for show... Richard.

Tony,After dissecting my dash I could not find any remnants of an aerial lead or a power lead. Could it be possible that the aerial lead (if fitted) ran between the dash and the window through the door jam up to the roof rack? Or could it be that there was no radio installed in this vehicle? I found a photo from the 2003 G4 trials in Canada where a Disco II had a Garmin "GPS V" unit installed in the exact same area on the dash (right below the removable rubber pad). It looks like from the photo that the aerial for the GPS unit ran through the door up to the roof. Do you know where I might be able to look for photo's of vehicle number 78 from the 2003 Challenge? I am trying to rebuild my vehicle back to the condition she was in during the event and have had no luck in securing actual event photo's. If anyone has any shots of vehicle 78, I sure would appreciate it if you could pass them along. Regards, Dan

Dan,
On mine the aerial lead was cable tied under the dash on the passenger foot well, as mine is Right Hand Drive that would be the left hand footwell.
Somewhere I've got a picture of the inside showing both the radio and the GPS unit mounted in the centre of the dash on a piece of wood, not sure that the GPS used an external aerial.
Cheers,

Dan,
Here's the pic of the GPS and Radio fitted into a DII.
I've lightened it up a bit which is why the windscreen looks awful!

Hi Dan on my car the areil lead is just laying on the dash against the bottom of the windscreen it is tucked right in the grove and ,i had the car 4 months before i found it .Ive never seen a power lead and have no idea where the lead goesregards tony

Tony thanks for the update. I am going to look under the dash when I get some time this weekend. I looked all along the windscreen and could not find any signs of an aerial lead. I am hoping that the vehicle processor that tore apart the car after the 2003 challenge left the aerial lead in place. If not, it should not cost too much to find one and replace. I am finding that the vehicle processor did some modifications to the car after the challenge. One example is that the wiring for the lights on the roof rack was originally run through snorkel on the left hand side of the vehicle. After the vehicle processor removed the snorkel, they ended up routing the wiring for the lights through the window pilar on the right side of the vehicle. They also removed the stock controllers that WARN includes in the SDB 160 light kits. The light controller ended being a converted cruise control switch with an auxiliary light faceplate attached. Any ideas on who (or where) is a good source of photos from the 2003 event? I am looking for photo's from stage 1 and 4 for vehicle 78.

xtc,
I'd be interested both in an antenna and a radio.
Licence is not a problem for me as I'm swedish and have a licence for VHF as well.
Contact me if we can arrange something.

Hope this information helps......- the radio aerial leads to the left of the windscreen and the power cable to the right and this is what they look like.......:)
There is a DIN plug that goes into the dash; the white plastic power lead and a small 4 pin circular plug on the same cable. this is joined to the red black wires where the silver aerial plug is pointing! So much power. They are permanently live with positions 1 and 2 on the circular plug also live. Which is the radio supply? and which is the Garmin supply? What was the DIN used for? I also have twin 12v cigarette and DIN power points on the front passenger seat support between the legs; on the nearside rear head lining and a single cigarette power outlet in the load area. Also 240v power inverter under the drivers seat!:w00t: Does everyone else have these??? My G4 I was told was used in Australia as a press vehicle its number was 106 ( I found a g4 windscreen number sticker partially covered in sand stuck to the inside of the passenger door pocket!) Paul Fritz-Johnson Discovery II from Australia and much modified.

Wolfman,
I hope this can help, myself I don't have a DII, but a D3, but Garmin GPS is more of a home court to me from the boating world.
The black round connection is the same as I've hade on several Garmin units. If you know what unit was used go to www.garmin.com and download the manual for that unit and you'll know for sure. The other two connectors matches the two cables and contacts that I have in my glovebox for the radio (antenna and power) and they were supposedly the same in 2003 and 2006 so should be why...
The Garmin connection can contain power and antenna in and NMEA information (position, speed and other info) going out.
Hope this helps.

By Erasmus - 14 May 2008
The small round plug is the Garmin supply and the other is the radio. They are connected to the fuse box behind the panel by the driver and are permanently live. The garmin plug only supplies power, there is no GPS output on it in this configuration. I've heard of two different Garmin units being used, one is the Garmin GPS V and the other is a Garmin GPSMap 176. Not sure if different vehicles had different units or if my info is not correct at the moment.
I would guess the other plugs you have are for charging of phones etc as it was a media vehicle. Have you got any pics of them?
Cheers,

Here are some pictures and I have since found another pair of plugs.... How many power outlets does the G4 DII have offcially? Did only press vehicles have extras?
These are in the rear load area, there is the other (no photo) factory fit one behind the near side rear passenger seat. (I have taken out the metal rear storage bins and added the plastic FF items as my vehicle is used daily as its just more convienient, the rear shelf and dog guard has been has been adapted to still fit and is installed every summer for camping...
this pair is by the head of the near side rear passenger........
on the front passenger seat box......
and finally this is under the drivers seat. Now if I connect a 12v battery to all of these outlets would my car be classified as an electrical hybrid and fall into a lower taxation class!:D But seriously, can anyone reccomend a battery monitoring system? Paul
|
By martin bisby - 16 May 2008
wolfmanquite a few useful extras you have in the vehicle, i would say they were put there for the journo's convienience being a press car and all. battery moniters are in the catorgory you pay for what you get and and are all subjective. regards martin

By jimcarr - 16 May 2008
Hi Wolfman,All the components (power sockets, DIN sockets and voltage inverters) in your pictures where of my manufacture, I don't know what company actually fitted these to the press cars, but presume you run a second battery through a split charge system of some sort. If so your main starter/vehicle battery will look after its self and it is the second deep cycle liesure battery you would like to monitor - stick a volt meter on it, if its above 11 volts your ok! Cheers
|
By Erasmus - 16 May 2008
Hmm, gives me some ideas for extra power in mine :)
Mine was a Media/Film vehicle and it didn't have any of those extra sockets fitted to it, let alone the inverter. Would be interested to know where they're all wired back to and as Jim says do you have a second battery fitted?
If the inverter is under the drivers seat, do you still have a CD Changer under there as well?
Cheers,
|
By Wolfman - 16 May 2008
Hi guys,I am running a second yellow top battery (does`nt everyone?) and that is a cool 13.2volts. My main battery is a red top and is 10.4! and its not a year old yet (engine running is a lovely 14.4) I do have a cd multichanger under the seat as well. Wolfman

By Erasmus - 16 May 2008
Paul,
Was there a second battery in the car already or did you fit it yourself? If it was there already do you know if it was fitted by LR? Have you got any pics of how it is mounted?
Cheers,
|
By Wolfman - 16 May 2008
Hi,the yellow top auxillary battery is mounted so
and was fitted to the car when I bought it, the chap I bought it from did not say he did it so I assumed LR did it..... On further investigation all the additional sockets are live with ignition off at 13.2v - therefore powered by this yellow top. I take it you dont have one fitted? Wolfman
|
By martin bisby - 16 May 2008
i see your yellow top is fitted where some D2's have the secondary air fitted, i suppose that will make distribution of cables and power easier.any chance of piccies as to where the charging system is routed to the yellow top and of course the original red top have you a split charger or are they wired parrallal regards martin
|
By Wolfman - 17 May 2008
Here goes on the explanation......Current red top position... (sorry this shot is a little blurred)
what you can see here is the many connections to the +ve side of the battery one of them being from the +ve side of the yellow top. The two -ve wires one to earth and I think one to the winch. The cable route for the +ve side is......
along the bottom of the bonnet seal resting on the top of the layer of wires, neatly cable tied into position.... to this durite relay just behind the fuse box (The smaller wires from the +ve term go to a 30A inline fuse holder and then off to the inside of the car - presumably to the power outlets)
from this it runs to the +ve terminal on the red top...
The negative side runs to the front of the car and is bolted to the bodywork here.... to the bolt in the centre of the photo. This is just in front of the air filter box.
Remembering basic physics from school they are wired in parallel. As for a "split charging" system I don`t know what I am looking for? Does everyone have a 120 amp alternator? Which is what I have; i.e. has mine been upgraded because of all the surplus power requirements???
this shot is upside down but defintely 120 A and 14v! Are other Discovery IIs like this? Also What is secondary air????? Wolfman

I can confirm the four pin round connector is for the Garmin GPS, the other was for the radio.

Very very comprehensive - :ermm: now where to fit a second battery to a RRS - any ideas !Regards Paul
|
By jimcarr - 20 May 2008
Hi Wolfman,Re your split charge system, not very nice in my opinion, they have used an ignition controlled 120 amp relay (my part number 0-727-18) connected buy 35 amp wire to the main battery and 120 amp alternator (you could start a nice fire here if you wanted!) It may only become a problem if your second battery is nearly flat and your 120 amp alternator would want to push that sort of current up the small wire. Get some one to do the job properly with a 120 amp Moss Fet technology charge splitter that can handle the current. I have had trouble with Optima red top batteries on my rally vehicles (yellow tops seem to last ok, but the red tops die in 12 months) I now replace them with Maxima batteries that last much better (not replaced one yet) and slightly cheeper! Cheers

Must agree with Jim,Have fitted a three way Mos Fet and Maxima Batteries (well Gert did) and i am very impressed.

Does anyone have any photo's (close up's preferred) of the rear work lamp and how it is mounted to the roof rack? I recently secured a new LR Rear Work lamp and it came with the standard 90 degree bracket to mount to the surface. I assembled the lamp to the bracket and when I went to install the unit, there were no similarities in the mounting bracket and the roof rack. My roof rack has a hole drilled out in the area where the bracket would be mounted. I am assuming that this bracket was either modified for use on the G4 vehicles or was not used all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lamp is fitted directly to bracket on the rear of SD rack. Best pic I could find. Cable runs through the roofrack tube from the front and out of a rubber grommet.
