Expedition Roofrack v Roof Tents

Hi all

I'm new to this forum and hoping to purchase a G4 vehicle of some sort soon.  After various phases of Landrover's, I have settled on the Overland option.  My question is:

"Can a 'Howling Moon', 'Hannibal', 'Eazi-Awn' or similiar be fitted onto the G4 Exped Roofrack?  I ask this as I haven't seen any pics that show this.  Or, hopefully until now :)

Thanks for your help.

hi

although roof tents were not fitted to the G4 vehicles there is no reason why they cannot be fitted, i personally think they are more suited to the 110's as opposed to the others in the fleet.

i saw a howling moon being fitted to a G4 at peterbro last year and whilst i have no experience of the quality i was extremely dissapointed at the somewhat crude method of adjusting the tent to fit the roof rack. had i paid all that money for one there would be addressing some issues.

all i would say is yes they can be fitted but are not correct for the genere' of the challenge.

ps

apologies if i am wrong nice to see a CI take an interest in Adv Trg

regards

martin

If you are thinking of the LR exped roof rack fitted to the RRS and D3, then the answer is 'yes, but....' - I think you have to remove the side bars to get it to fit.

The Defender racks seem to take the rooftents as Kim has responded, and One of the FreeL owners in the club has a roof tent on his, not sure what mods were needed.

Not seen a D2 with a tent, but I thinks Martin's comments would suggest some mods were required to tent or rack?

Think it will comes down to the model of G4 vehicle to buy

I run a Maggiolina roof tent,, and will not realistically fit the Exp rack on the Sport !! too long and too wide, even the small version ,,removal of the side bars, (if possible) as Craig suggests, may help !!  It fits on the Defender just fine

I moved over to the Maggiolina, about 4 years ago, after a season in a Howling Moon,, not impressed,, flapped about in any sort of breeze, once wet, stayed wet, just soaked it up,, poor valve for money,

Here is a picture of ours, great tent used it in very severe weather and it was superb, bottom annex is very handy too as it gives you somewhere to change and eat if the weather is bad. takes a little longer to put up against our old Brownchurch but it has stacks of room and the built in mattress makes up some of the time. It also drys off fairly fast.

I have run my Howling Moon on both my D1 with safety devices highlander roofrack and on my G4 D110 with the G4 rack. As I did not want to cut a pair of very expensive roofracks I made some brackets up that support the tent between the roofrack floor cross bars and the rear top rail. Murphy law dictated they they were both different and they will need to be different for my 03 rack.

These brackets clamped to the rack using 'U' bolts.

The downside with doing this is that the tent is lifted another 125mm so raising the c of g though the D1 appeared to be affected less as it had anti roll bars fitted and OME suspension.

I too am not impressed with some of the methods some of the retailers use to fit these tents on some roofracks. They are too flimsy and protrude beyond the tent / roofrack.

If the additional height is an issue a 1.2m width of tent will fit inside side rails of a 2006 G4 style of roofrack and when bolted down can sit 30mm above the rack floor. The tent will then need to open forwards and fit inside the rack (just) though this will not allow anything else to be fitted on the roofrack. The Maggiolina rooftents are a good fit inside a 2006 roofrack but again you lose any other carrying space.

If you are setting up with a bias to expedition use then the Patriot or hannibal racks may be better as they have removable sides and also floor sections that are easier to attach to.
