However, as my G4 was a press vehicle, it didnt have a winch fitted originally: it was fitted by one of the previous owners, but I think he fitted it correctly. __________________________G4ROX 2002 Range Rover G4 __________________________

Winches are more trouble than they're worth! Better to get yourself a TDV6 Auto instead. Group: Forum Member Posts: 26, Visits: 253	I normally have a 110 for weekend chores ...and recently sold my 110 Mongo to Sweep ... but the price of 110's are out of 'kilter' at the moment because of the snow ... thinking of a disco 3 and having it 'caged' for my little trips. But agree after 30 odd years I have never needed a winch ...a good rope and another car ...however a caged D3 with a winch would have a better re-sale value in a couple of years time with the 'pay and play' brigade as it would 'look the part'.

Also, unless you're doing serious competition stuff, I'm not sure if it's going to be necessary as the D3 shell is pretty tough! Resale value & ease of sale is better & quicker if you keep the car standard... My 2p. I'd go for a coil D3 if I were to get one again especially if taking it on any trips/travels less electrickery to go tits up. And I'd have a winch on it, just to be on the safe side if I were a lone vehicle. Sods law the one time you'll need it and all that... M yes..your right .. however modern high tensile materials are alot lighter than the old 'blue band' pipe .. and if you eliminate roof racks / caged rears and spare wheel carriers ..it wont be too much heavier...especially with only 2 people inside. For a couple of grand I would rather be safe than find out the Discovery shell aint that strong after falling down a hillside in the Pyrenees or a dune. To-date I have never had a problem selling a car .... a good car normally sells its self in the right circles.

Group: Past Forum Member Posts: 15, Visits: 418	D3 shell is made of high strength steel and I would guess is already stronger than a caged Defender. I think the press put a RRS sport down the side of a mountain on a G4 event and they walked away fine. A cage can be dangerous in a road car as it puts hard objects in car that the driver and passengers can hit in an accident, if not restrained with full harnesses. I sure would not want a side impact in my 110 as my head would it hit a (padded) cage, versus a soft air bag in a modern car... That said I would never own a Defender without a cage due to it's construction, a D3 is just a different generation (by at least three). At 2500 kg without a cage a D3 does not need any more weight adding above the wheels!
