As someone who is currently looking to buy a D3 I have been researching insurance......
The main thing that surprised was the cost, I am 42yrs old, have 12yrs protected NCB, clean Licence...... my current 2001 RR Bordeaux is £450 pa & my 1991 RR Classic 300tdi is £350 pa (5000 mile limit). The classic is modified so far from standard that it only vaguely looks like a RR.
My insurance broker (Adrian Flux) quoted me £1300 for a 2008 D3 G4...... I then asked them to quote for a 2009 D3 XS with all the modifications fitted aftermarket. The insured value is the same once you allow for the cheaper cost of buying the car plus the increased cost of fitting the winch etc ....... the second quote was £400 more!!! Appparently entirely due to ME modifying the car rather than LR.
Insurance is one of those things that we have to have & those of us that have cars that differ from the 'norm' have to pay through the nose for the priviledge.
I have never understood insurance companies.
Nick
On RR's No. 4 & 5 respectively..... 1991 RR Classic 200tdiOff-Roader, modified to within an inch of its life! 2001 RR Bordeaux, as original as when it left the factory. Did sneak a 2003 D2 in there once aswell.

I'd expected to have a load of hassle insuring the RRS here in Oz, the reality has been completely the opposite and a refreshing change I have to admit. If Nick can come up with a suitable agreement it would be very worthwhile for UK members, considering that to replace a G4 with like for like in the UK does usually entail paying more than for a standard car. I had mine insured with Bell and they were a nightmare when it came to the additions, because it's classed as modified and is therefore a licence to print money.
Over here, I contacted 2 specialist companies, Lumley Special Vehicles (as we have the wife's Triumph Spitfire with them) and Shannons. Lumley's weren't so good for the RRS, but Shannons were fantastic. The chap researched the G4 Challenge & the car on the interweb whilst I was on the phone to him (looked on here and wikipedia, bloke even reckoned he'd found a photo of the car) and came to the conclusion it's the only G4 RRS in Australia. Listed all the 'modifications' despite them being factory additions and gave it a value of $10k more than a dealer car, to cover the costs of sticking everything back onto a standard car, as we agreed there's no way I could import another to replace it with due to the daft regulations here. It's been valued at AUD$65k, which I'm more than happy with. Best of all, even as a daily driver, the cost is lower than in the UK, it's worked out at about £550, so all in all not too bad. If a broker in the UK can come up with something like that, you'll be laughing.

Right, now I’m on me soap box.
It is blatantly obvious that we are punished by the insurance companies for having pride in our vehicles and not conforming to the jelly mould sales rep mobiles (no offence intended towards sales rep’s).
I myself
feel is though I have been in the past and still is being discriminated against and taken advantage of etc.
most owners of the off the shelf branded vehicles have no true pride in their vehicles, to them they are just a means of getting form A – B i.e. driving Miss Daisy,
school runs, shopping etc.
and don’t give a second thought about extra security or how and where they leave their vehicles.
I wouldn’t mind betting that we as a minority group ( G4 / CT owners) however are the total opposite.
If any of our vehicles become damaged or stolen there is a very limited source to get a replacement.
Each vehicle lost means a part of the history and heritage of LR is lost.
Unlike Mr Ford Focus we cannot get our cheque from the insurance company and jog down to the nearest dealership and say to the Salesperson “ I’ll have one of those in puce
pink please”.
I do take pride and I do take care going the extra to ensure that my vehicle remains mine and is maintained to a high standard.
For this having pride and enjoying the ownership of a bespoke vehicle I am legally obliged to accept outrageous fee’s.
Sure none of the insurance companies force me into buying their extortionate
policies from them but when none of them have a true understanding of the vehicles (which includes the so called specialist vehicle insurance companies) there are only a few that will take you on.
Well shame on them and roll on the day when there is a true Land Rover Specialist Insurance Company who talks the talk and offers a true service at a honest price. A clear example that it is achievable is the company down in Oz (Shannon’s)
as identified by MikeS.

Quick update:
Following on from my previous post I have held several discussions with underwriters who have confirmed interest in backing this project.
I am awaiting further information to progress but the reponse so far has been positive and encouraging.
Once things have progressed will keep you posted.
Cheers

Apparently Academy Insurance Services are quite good at insuring specialist/modified vehicles, we use them a lot on the Northants 4x4 Response team as we all have very modified vehicles, might be worth approaching them too..?
If you want me to get contact details please PM me.
Cheers
Andi

Hi Andi
Sent you over a PM last week about Academy Insurance Services!
Could you please forward contact details, I looked at their web site but couldn't find anything about 4x4 or modified vehicles, so I must be looking in the wrong place?

I'd be very interested, I'm with Adrian Flux for my 300TDI Commercial which is reasonable, they just quoted me £637 fully comp with 9yrs protected NCB..... But didnt know what a G4 was so thats likely to go up!
