Hi Phil,
Sorry I have no knowledge of the West Midlands group but you may find more information on the National Forum website
As far as our group goes most the calls come via a text message or phone call.

I'm a member of the North East 4x4 Response which is part of the same national network.
Most of our work is with Northern Doctors Urgent Care where we typically ferry the out-of-hours doctors around Northumberland either to patients houses or to hospitals or other medical centres when the weather means driving normal doctors cars would be hazzardous or just not possible.
We have also in the past been called out to assist the emergency services in situations where 4x4's are needed like when Morpeth was hit with the floods a couple of years back.
As far as commitment goes its 100% voluntary. There is no formal commitment and were not on standby. If we get a shout and your available to help you do, If your not then so-be-it.
At least for us, there is little financial commitment besides that of the yearly club membership. If we get called out then the doctors pay our mileage which covers fuel and some wear and tear. I'm not sure if this is always the case for all groups so you would be better off asking the South East group directly.
Hope this helps.
Ian

Does anybody have any first hand experience of involvement with this or similar groups. What's involved level of commitment, likely costs of volunteering (exc membership)
Any independent information would be much appreciated as I am considering joining.
Thanks
