Being an automatic, I then noticed that the gear selector indicator which is usually displayed on the dashboard wasnt there and knocking the gears into sport mode made no difference.
After pulling over, killing the ignition and restarting, all seems to be ok. Is this a known problem and has anyone has a similar experience?

You could try the dealers. They can hook your vehicle up to LR computer and do a software update(thats the thing with technology eh? it needs a little kick up the arse every now and then). It may be more than this but definatley worth a shot. You could also see while your there if your vehicle is due any recall work, ask service dudes to put your vin and LR computer and see if it brings owt up.
