I have admiral multi car and they insure the d3 with the snorkel, as it is a factory fitted extra and it is on the policy with the list of factory fitted extras.

As I suspected Bone call centre obviously. He didn't even ask for factory fitted extras but was obsessed by the snorkel, hey ho. Quote me happy were only a couple of quid more.....

I have an Admiral multi car policy, added to my small 'fleet' after much trouble with the call centre - eventually insisted on a speaking to a supervisor, I emailed in the D3 V8 55 Spec sheets, and they said £200 fully comp - protected ncd 5K miles/annum. Rationale was all stuff was factory fitted - lights, roof rack bash plates and snorkel etc. i.e. no personel modifications!

Well that all went pear shaped. Although all bits on my G4 are from the options list
Admiral rescinded their quote because of the snorkel (raised air intake) citing that this means the vehicle is used for 'extreme' off road use comparing it with a tricked out Jeep Rubicon, and we don't insure those type of vehicles.
Spent 3 weeks getting to the bottom of it.
Ageas also said 'no' due to the winch! I assured both that the vehicle would only be used on 'public highways' and that included green lanes, public byways both here and abroad, but nope - they is the rules they said.
Finally found Aviva would do it, £387 9yrs NCD and xs 450 (again the winch fitted upped the xs!)
Never thought it was going to be that difficult.

One thing I have noticed when dealing with our work fleet is that all the insurers now are trying to pigeon hole vehicle types and use. Apart from making it a complete pain in the arse to get insurance it also means that the underwriters (there are only about 12 in the country) can set up "niche" market insurance companies who can then charge what they like because none of the others will touch you. We now self insure our work fleet while essential car users are still required to insure their own vehicle under their own policy.
I had an old SJ with a snorkel on it and few companies would touch me, direct line gave it legs halfway through the policy when I had the thing fitted - once I told them it was for work purposes and that as part of said job I may have to traverse flooded roads but the company doesn't supply me with a vehicle and I have to use my own so all I was trying to do was protect the engine from more damages, they couldn't insure me quick enough. I think it put the policy up by a few quid but it didn't affect my excess

Just to add to the discussions above, I have just insured the 08 D3 and having talked with many types of brokers, ended up with Aviva direct at £275 NCB protected, which was not the most competitive in the comparison sites but the only reputable company that acknowledged that all the G4 kit was LR fitted pre-registration, which is now stated in my policy. Any bits that you 'add-on' post registration are classified as modifications from standard. However, the way they covered themselves against the additional risk from a standard HSE is by upping the excess by another £300 to £600, which is fine by me.
In the past I had been with all the brokers and underwriters mentioned previously, as current owner of 5 various LR non LR vehicles, and from my experience of insuring G4s over the past years, and having 2 LRs stolen, I would strongly recommend to all members that whoever you insure with:
You declare the full spec of the vehicle (there are spec sheets for every vehicle on the forum);
Get it mentioned on your policy that the spec is G4 Challenge; it is special LR spec and factory fitted, i.e. not modified.
Avoid (unfortunately) the brokers at the back of LRO as I have yet to find an appropriate broker who would satisfy our needs - although I have had some tentative discussions with a broker who approached the club but no result as yet.
There are many underwriters who will not touch snorkel'd, underbody protected or winch fitted vehicles, but disreputable brokers will pass you off to them without you knowing what they have actually agreed. Therefore have it in black & white on the schedule.

For all those that are on admiral, Just looking at putting my fleet over to them. The one thing they will not cover is any form of off roading! They covered the disco fine with all the winch and snorkel as such!
They will however cover when its at a show and in the arena displaying. The cost difference from Adrian flux is amazing almost over £400 saved on the fleet.
So any thoughts here?

I have no previous G4 vehicle experience but I offer a vote for Adrian Flux who covered my Defender 90 with no trouble and I have just arranged for my (new to me) G4 RRS to be swapped over.
They needed no telling what the G4 vehicle was and seemed very clued up about kit list. All I had to do was confirm that it has not been modified over and above its original G4 spec.
Being old and retired (just) so using it only for social, domestic etc the fully comp quote was very reasonable. I didn't use any no claims as I have that on a BMW and it was cheaper to cover the RRS separately than add it to an existing policy.
Just my 2p.
