If you're within the warranty period and have spent between £35K & £50k on a Disco or RR you're hardly likely to risk non franchised just in case something goes wrong. Sadly LR not renowned for build quality so undoubtedly you'll be using the warranty at sometime in the first three years.
On my wifes D3 it had new sat nav screen / new sunroof & new gearbox in first year. We bought 18 months old and its been perfect ever since.

I have started this topic because i own a freelander and just had to replace my Fuel pump and the two filters, plus have my front diff tightened and also had the value service done on the vehicle.
when i went to pick the vehicle up it cost me £684 which blew me away. After coming back down to the ground and had seen the breakdown of it all the parts were reasonably priced but the labour was £85 an hour.
now to me that is expensive.
Is this about right in other peoples eyes to charge this as the car was repaired at an approved land rover garage.
thanks, enjoy the mud, craig
Here we go!!
Ok, any main dealer is always going to be more than an independant. The sites cost a fortune to run, special tools have to be bought, every tech has to go on regular training courses, etc etc.
An independant has far fewer costs to drive their labour rate up.
Now specifically about your case, you imply you wherent expecting the bill to be that much. You should have authorised any work required and approved the costs prior to it being carried out. The service advisor looking after your vehicle should have done this, if not why not?
Fuel pump failure on a TD4 is fairly normal and its good practise (although in my opinon not essential) to change the filters, but I'm confused by tightening the front diff? Er, which bit do you mean?
Labour at £85p/h isnt bad. We're £100 now but thats still £10 less than the Ford dealer near by. London rates are obviously higher but you will find much lower rates in other parts of the country.
Personally if a vehicles under warranty always use a main dealer. We have access to the latest updates and bulletins etc. Out of warranty, upto you. But do remember the guys on service are up for a deal as much as those of us on sales. If you find some one you trust and can get a good relationship with they will look after you on costs. Maybe thats why we've got a Range Rover I sold to a customer in Wales in with us for a service at the moment?
If you want any direct advise with a dealer and what work they've done PM and I'll talk to our guys for you.
