I'd say its a good lesson learned; for either synthetic or steel ropes, the trick is to add a "sail", even if it's a jacket or some other item of clothing, to dampen or attract people to the dangers of a snapping winch line... ?

On most challenge events, its compulsory to always use a winch sail, whenever winching,, but having snapped a few ropes,, have yet to see and damping effect on synthetic ropes,,only useful job a sail does is attracts attention to the line, if crossing a track for instance !! on steel ropes, sails do a good job,, Regards Tim

i know its dyneema rope but surely for safety you dont stand as close as the spotter is to a winch operation?
